Students at Bangor Area High School in Pennsylvania were encouraged by the schools Gay-Straight Alliance to wear rainbow-colored T-shirts on Friday of last week in support of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender issues.
Instead, two students wore Chick-fil-A T-shirts. Suspensions followed on Monday. But those who were suspended may surprise you:
[The school] suspended a group of students for using Twitter during school hours to call out two students wearing Chick-fil-A shirts during a Gay-Straight Alliance event, parents and students said.
The suspended students felt the T-shirts were offensive because of widely publicized comments the fast food companys president and CEO, Dan Cathy, made in 2012 against gay marriage. The two students were part of a televised broadcast of the schools daily announcements. Offended students took to Twitter to express their thoughts, with the tweets against the two students continuing over the weekend.
One student tweeted to another who had criticized one of the students who wore the shirts:
Youre expressing your feelings Why cant he? The response:
Being an offensive [expletive] is not expressing your feelings. One of the suspended students tweeted:
Shout-out to the [expletive] in the Chik-fil-A shirts. The mother of the that suspended student weighed in with her opinion as well:
You want to encourage everyone to be their own person, and for someone to decide its OK for those two students to go on a morning show and wear a shirt like that with no repercussions, what is the school saying? That its OK? Perhaps the school was saying those students had every right, under the First Amendment, to wear the shirts?
Now the American Civil Liberties Union of Pennsylvania is investigating the suspensions, calling them a pretty harsh punishment.
So, who was right and who was wrong here? The students who wore the Chick-fil-A T-shirts? The students who harassed them throughout the weekend? Bangor Area High School for suspending the harassers?
Let us know what you think.
Thanks!
100% agree.
Sorry about the mess of links, don’t know how to separate them out. It works okay on single links.
If you hover your mouse pointer over a username in a post, the user’s sign up date should pop up. That will give you an idea how long it can last.
I don’t know about Maine, but recent anti bullying legislation in Minnesota requires schools to deal with ALL “bullying” between students regardless of when and where it occurs. Horrid law.
I started to say that no one should have been suspended, that what the “harassers” did out of school is none of the school’s business and the T-shirts-so long as there are not required school uniforms- is none of the school’s business either, but then, that’s public school we are talking about. PS is the State and the State takes everything to be its business. What the right thing to do is to get all those kids, harassers and harassed alike, the hell out of the Government Day Prison for Children. If the harassers were home schooled, even in lefty families, they would grow up to be better adjusted and they won’t be harassing anyone in school.
But being Offended is what LGBTs do! It’s their life! LGBTs who are disturbed enough to belong to a political organization for pushing their “cause” are totally about their LGBTness. Everything else in life and on earth is incidental to that. They, being immersed since birth in a still basically Judaeo-Christian culture know in their subconscious or even their conscious minds that they are wrong, they are, in fact in SIn big time and they are in rebellion against that which they know at some level they cannot escape. They try to force the whole culture to change to worship LGBTness to be able to feel that they are not at odds with the world. They must push it to way beyond acceptance, even celebration, because normal straight is a reproof of themselves and they cannot escape that so long as there is any normalcy in existence. And then if they attain total dominance and the extinction of Normalcy, of course, they will not survive as a society or culture. I have lived through and seen this whole transformation from the closet and discretional acceptance to the universal flaunting and persecution of everyone else. The homosexuals I knew long ago were far more adjusted and content than the screamers are or can ever be.

“When will we setup concentration camps for those who opposed gay marriage? “
About this time next year.
Ms. Half will initiate the “ Jail For Heteros” program.
Let’s just skip all the dancing around and outlaw Christianity,
and let the games begin.

yes, suppose the two kids thought they should have
stayed home?
Man, I grew up near this area. It was very rural and I would guess conservative. This sends shivers down my spine.

No one prohibited them from wearing rainbow colors...did you read the article, or are you just knee jerk defend the gay cause whenever it arises?
