Another thing Americans don’t want is Huckabee.

So he is correct on one issue, and wrong on everything else?

I asked this question the other day, and got no answer:
Why is it we could afford to invade and occupy Iraq for a decade, at the cost of $1 trillion, and stay in Afghanistan at the cost of $5 billion a month — but we can’t afford to keep paying Social Security? Why is there enough money for invasions (and nation-building abroad), but there’s not enough for seniors at home who’ve paid in their whole lives?

Just asking.

I don’t want to go to work, or stop eating pizza. We all have to do things we don’t like.

Crying over the fact that FDR scammed several generations isn’t going to fix anything.

The figures you quote are ~$150 billion per year.

Social Security runs roughly $1000 billion per year.

The Iraq/Afghanistan project is nominally in defense of this country, which is a legitimate function of government.

Taking money from one person by force to give to another person, except in compensation for services rendered, is theft, and not a legitimate function of government.

Most current retirees collect what they “paid in their whole lives” within the first few years of their retirement; after that, it’s just welfare.

Any other questions you’d like answered?

By the way, Ida May Fuller, the first Social Security recipient, paid $22 in the course of her working life.

She lived to nearly 100, and collected nearly $22000 in benefits.

You in any way uncomfortable with that?

The Huckster is trapped in a parallel NannyState universe. Unicorns, fairy dust, and magic wands should make everything O.K. Tell people what they want to hear rather than make hard choices that are based on reality. After all, it’s worked so well for the last 70+ years.

We have to get over the wants and deal with the needs.

The only reason “Americans don’t want Social Security reform” is because their elected officials are too cowardly to tell them the truth.

The system will collapse unless something is done.

Such is the nature of ALL taxes.

You made a wrong turn. FR is on the right, HuffPost is on the left. You also are off by orders of magnitude when comparing billions or even one trillion to our unfunded liabilities. But hey what’s a hundred trillion among friends?

If every person who’s paid into this Ponzi Scheme had had that money to invest, we’d all be wealthy beyond our dreams.

How I loathe Mother Government; there’s nothing she can’t eff up!

I hired a contractor to do a lot of repairs and after all was done, he actually expected me to pay up in full and would not accept 1% as paid in full.He said something about some silly contract that I signed.

Taxation to fund the legitimate functions of government are not theft.

What are the legitimate functions of government? Things you can legitimately, at least in principle if not in scale, do yourself.

You have a right to protect your person and property; therefore operating a police force and a military organization are legitimate functions of government.

You do not have a right to stick a knife in your neighbor’s ribs to demand he help pay for your kid’s schooling; therefore, operating taxpayer-funded schools for the masses is not a legitimate function of government.

And so on.

We had trillions to blow/waste/burn in Iraq and Aghanistan, but when it comes to our seniors at home, there’s no money.

“Cost is no object” when it comes to wasting money overseas, but we can’t afford Social Security.

You may find a way to explain that schizophrenia to fit your ideological agenda, but average Americans understand that the case for cutting Social Security is phony as long as we can find all the money in the world to invade and occupy (and “nation build”) overseas.
