Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo ordered emergency measures on Sunday to combat the wage theft and health hazards faced by the thousands of people who work in New York State’s nail salon industry.
Effective immediately, he said in a statement, a new, multiagency task force will conduct salon-by-salon investigations, institute new rules that salons must follow to protect manicurists from the potentially dangerous chemicals found in nail products, and begin a six-language education campaign to inform them of their rights.
Nail salons that do not comply with orders to pay workers back wages, or are unlicensed, will be shut down. The new rules come in response to a New York Times investigation of nail salons — first published online last week — that detailed the widespread exploitation of manicurists, many of whom have illnesses that some scientists and health advocates say are caused by the chemicals with which they work.
“New York State has a long history of confronting wage theft and unfair labor practices head on, and today, with the formation of this new Enforcement Task Force, we are aggressively following in that tradition,” Mr. Cuomo said in a statement. “We will not stand idly by as workers are deprived of their hard-earned wages and robbed of their most basic rights.”

To put this in context, this was in response to a series of articles in the NY Times Magazine, which (despite the source) described some pretty horrendous practices in the industry in NYC (which has significantly more nail salons per capita than pretty much anywhere else in the world).

Not really on their own. Immigrants are eligible for govt-guaranteed loans not available to citizens. That’s how they start so many businesses.

Interviewed the author of NYT article. Very sympathetic to the poor workers.

It stressed the absolutely horrible life of a new worker in these. They pay up front, then work a while for nothing.
Long hours, hardly any time for themselves, nearly impossible if they have any children, and they come in all ages. Breaking all sorts of humanitarian laws.
Really made New York and whoever should be responsible - look REALLY BAD. I think it said there was virtually no one who was assigned to oversee this kind of work - as the problem. Compared to other businesses which have oversite.
Shutting down nail salons is going to put the salons in the underground.. NYC is already notorious for Chinese/Asian mafia, sheesh. Illegals are running them themselves. Human exploitation? Look at what Obama is doing on the border, Cuomo!
I can see it. A cop beats a black worker at a nail salon and Cuomo will blame white racist cops. We should give these people a Nurremberg trial. I do not know why anyone wants to be a cop in NYC. Cuomo does not have their back.
How about focusing on the well-being of all of the members of the NYPD????
Awhile back there was a thread discussing restaurant inspections in NYC and the hoops they need to go through. Someone brought up the stats on NYC abortion centers.
