Despite what the Pentagon may say, the "degrade and defeat" strategy against the Islamic State terror group isn't going well. Instead, the militants gained control of the provincial capital of Ramadi after months of contesting it with Iraqi Security Forces and Sunni tribes.
And that means the Islamic State (aka ISIS, ISIL, or Daesh) now has a superhighway or sorts across Syria and Iraq.
Ramadi is the capital of Anbar, Iraq's largest region. The province is predominantly Sunni and abuts onto Baghdad, which is only a little more than fifty miles away. Now that Ramadi has fallen, ISIS will have much more of a clear shot running supplies and fighters straight to a front against the Iraqi capital.

We’re only bombing asprin factories. Wouldn’t want to interrupt the caliphate.
As I recall, the Iranian militias assisted the Iraqi forces in taking back Fallujah. As far as I know, the Iraqi government still controls fallujah. I’m thinking that is ISIS’s next goal. Once Fallujah falls, they will be really close to Bagdad and all of the Anbar province will effectively be in ISIS’s hands.
I don’t understand how ISIS can run their Toyota trucks on highways all over Iraq/Syria. They should be sitting ducks for air power.
What the hell is going on with our military? Obama tells the media last week to stop reporting ISIS as an organized military operation, as they are just individual fighters on the run. What are these bozos doing?
If Assad falls, ISIS has a corridor to the Med. Why THE HECK are we fighting Assad?
And remember, just a short time ago, that @ss McCain pushing for American power to overthrow Assad and turn Syria on its head?
Is this the result he was seeking?
Why? What difference does it make who controls which highway over there? It’s Sunni vs Shia for over 1000 years.
Which team are we on?
“I dont understand how ISIS can run their Toyota trucks on highways all over Iraq/Syria. They should be sitting ducks for air power.”
You left off the /s.
Bagdad had been sacked and re-sacked dozens of times over many centuries by various factions of Islam.
Why is everyone so upset. Obama told us this was just the JV team. Pffft... nothing to worry about.
Obama doesn't like secular governments, he wants radical Islamic governments. What do you think was behind his actions in Egypt and Libya?
“If Assad falls, ISIS has a corridor to the Med. Why THE HECK are we fighting Assad?”
You answered your question immediately before asking it.
The leftists’ god Hussein, all Democrats and about half of “Republicans” are actively supporting our enemies.
The Fraud and his administration are NOT incompetent.
ISIS does not have the strength to take Bagdad right now. However, a year from now? Who knows. In the meantime, they could make life in Bagdad completely insane with day after day of foreign religious fanatics willing to die for Allah blowing themselves up, killing hundreds if not thousands of people all while ISIS prepares to mount the final push from fallujah and ramadi. If Bagdad were to ever fall, it would be over, except for the mop up operations. I don’t know if that’s possible, but they could certainly paralyze the whole country.
So?
Why is this our problem? Bagdad had been sacked and re-sacked dozens of times over centuries. Sunni, Shia, other sects ... who ever came along with enough brute force.
This is the history of the region. Why should it all of a sudden be different now?
Pray tell which ones are our enemies? Sunnis or Shias?
Which team do we play for?
One last thing, the real power behind ISIS are not the religious fanatics, they are idiot pawns. The true power behind the throne so to speak are the former Fadayeen and before that former Baathists of Sadaam. Their goals is to take back Iraq, not set up a caliphate. They want to install the next Sadaam and go back to their positions of power within the Baathist administration.
This is the same battle we were fighting in 2005 - 2007.
Yes and so?
What is our objective here?
Do we want to rule Iraq ourselves?
If not, which team do we want ruling there?
Why is one faction better than the other and for whom?
Whoever the Fraud supports is our enemy.
Pretty simple, once you finally understand the POSOTUS cannot be trusted about ANYTHING.
People here who pick and choose which of his headlines to believe seem to most often give him the benefit of the doubt whenever possible.
