A top GOP 2016 contender is 'living above his means' and making risky moves with his bank account

A top contender for the Republican presidential nomination cashed out his retirement savings to pay some nagging bills for a broken refrigerator, air-conditioning unit, and his kids' private-school tuition.

According to The Washington Post, Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Florida) sold $68,241 worth of retirement funds in September after bills began piling up at home.

It's a risky move since it incurs a significant tax penalty.

“It means that he is probably on some level living above his means, because he is borrowing against his future,” Boston University economist Laurence Kotlikoff told The Post.

When asked about his finances on Fox News, Rubio blamed the high costs of running for president as well as expensive and unforeseen family costs.

This guy is an amateur, he should follow the lead of all the other Democrats -— Hillary Clinton, Robert Menendez, Sheldon Silver, etc. By peddling his influence in the senate to the highest bidder.

That way, he should have more than enough money for personal expenses and then some.

Hmmmm. Someone willingly liquidates their retirement fund with huge tax penalties. Do we want this man in charge of America’s Pocketbook?

Not that things can GET any worse, of course, but still.

Dumb. Just, dumb.

The only reason I’m inclined to find some truth in this story is that’s how Senators and Representatives have been running public finance since 1933.

What’s the big deal? Hillary and Bill were “Dead Broke” when they left the White House. They had to steal furniture to survive. They even stole the “W” from every keyboard.

I suppose if he made a ton of money in cattle futures to cover his shortfall they wouldn't be interested in his finances at all.

So the guy's running for President and he's strapped. BFD.

NOT a Rubio supporter, but this certainly is a hit piece trying to make him look too irresponsible with his personal finances to be President.

Bad for Rubio, but OK for the USA to do the same?

He’ll either get the nomination and win, or else he’ll get a job paying a seven-figure salary from one of his financial backers. Either way I don’t think the long term financial prospects for the Rubio family are bleak.

Look, I’m not a Rubio supporter, but this is nothing more than a hypocritical hit by the left. The same people who adore Hillary and all the other lying leftist crooks.
Has this guy written about Charlie Rangel recently? What about Al Sharpton or a myriad of other leftist leaders.

This is nothing more than the orchestrated effort maximize attrition by discrediting Republicans one-by-one and then badly bloodying the last weakened Republican who is left standing.

Yep, all he has to do is set up a “charity” and pay himself a huge salary and give away a little.

$68,241?

What? That’ll buy oh, about 3 seconds of national air time.

If Rubio can’t pay, he can’t play.
