Young American liberals are losing the ability to argue
Spiked Online ^ | 5/23/15 | Alex Kasnetz

**SNIP**

Derision, rather than refutation, seems to be the norm of discourse in mainstream politics as well. Accordingly, opposing views are seen as a sign of some moral defect, not genuine disagreement. Earlier this year, for example, a prominent Democrat compared delaying the confirmation of Loretta Lynch as attorney general (she’s the first African-American woman to be given the role) to Jim Crow segregation. Elsewhere, questioning certain sexual-assault statistics makes one a ‘rape apologist’; proponents of traditional marriage are dismissed as ‘bigots’; and even President Obama is called sexist for arguing with Senator Elizabeth Warren about a trade bill (he called her ‘Elizabeth’).

Progressives think their vitriolic name-calling undermines their opponents. But Munger has it right: ‘The absence of [dissent] is harmful, not so much to those who would agree with the dissenting voice, but to those who are thus denied the chance to collide with error.’

A recent study suggests the Republican Party is the strongest it has been in decades. Should this trend continue, should liberals lose the minds and hearts of Americans, should prejudice not die but fester, then progressives need only look in the mirror to find whom to blame.

Leftist brainwashing has consequences.

Their brains have been washed clear down to the RED base. That is seemingly impermeable.

Complete baloney. Some of us slipped through your generation’s indoctrination. I despise your generation’s leftist conventional wisdom. I am hungry to defeat your generation, politically speaking.

Oh no they haven’t. From the beginning, every time some one says anything they didn’t like, they would immediately call that person a “RACIST”, a “HOMOPHOBE”, an “ISLAMOPHOBE”, or what ever “PHOBE” word they can come up with. Nothing has changed. They haven’t come up with any argument that has made sense from the beginning.

They can always use the following arguments:

* Call you a racist.

* Call you a monster who wants people to starve, be homeless and grandma to be tossed off the cliff.

* Call you a greedy bastard who only cares for profit and pollute the planet.

Are you the DNC's head of advertising?

Are you nuts?

What brought on that generational raging, that white hot anger?

It is kind of funny how it served as a wonderful example of what my post was talking about, I just didn’t expect to see it from someone here though.

Argument done right is constructive. Too many lefties see it as combat. (Un-armed, as far as they are concerned.)

The old Greeks went so far as to say that the person taking the wrong side of an argument, when corrected, actually `won’ the argument.
They came away with something useful while the person who was able to show he was correct in the argument walked away with nothing new, so gained nothing.

We argue with ourselves all the time: “Should I stay on the interstate or take the two-lane gravel road shortcut which goes through the `hills with eyes’ where a monster named `Lizard’ may flat my tires breaking my axle, I will find I have no cell phone service and my family and I will then be eaten by cannibal mutants?”
Contemplating this, you stay on I-70.

For a reminder of how this works, just think of all the times that the modern young, out of the blue say “well, what about slavery man????” or “well, what about the crusades man????” which is head scratchingly off topic, almost always.

That's one of their techniques. Keep changing the subject. The ad hominem attack is usually their final retort, as in "you're a racist bigoted sexist homophobe."

It's the intellectual equivalent of covering their ears and going "lalalalalalalalala!"

Of course ad hominem is their method, because it works. Conservatives act like it’s some kind of cosmic law that being right wins the debate. Hate to break it to you but that’s not how it works.

As for me... conservative is not enough. It can not be, because it still worldly and thus still sinful. Only the best effort at a God’s eye viewpoint will do.
