Mental Health’s LGBT Blind Spot
The Federalist ^ | 05/24/2015 | Joseph Turner

A scene stands out to me from my graduate program in social work. A lesbian professor visited our class to tell about her experience of being same-sex attracted in a small, Midwestern, devoutly Protestant town in the latter twentieth century. As expected, her story was heart-rending.

Afterward, during the Q&A, a black woman in her 40s raised her hand. “I’ve noticed that the high school girls today go through phases where they say that they like girls, and then change their minds and say they like boys again, like it just goes back and forth. And I don’t know if they think it’s cute or what, but it seems to happen a lot these days. Do you have any thoughts on why that is?”

Before the speaker could offer a response, a young, outspoken lesbian student piped up. “I think a girl should be able to like whoever she wants to! If Susie wants to say she likes Joe one week, then Julie the next, then Bobby the week after that, that’s her choice and nobody else’s business!” No more was said on the topic. Apparently satisfied, the class moved with Q&A.

What makes this exchange so troubling is that it occurred in a social-work classroom. Social workers are regularly tasked with diagnosing and treating people’s mental health issues. How can we do that effectively if we accept the dogma that all same-sex attraction is healthy and normal?

Mental health treatment requires close analysis of every aspect of a person’s life. We put together the puzzle pieces that make up a human being. We inquire how many hours someone slept last night and how often he woke up. We form theories around their precise level of eye contact, rate of speech. We ponder how closely they were held as infants.

I do quite a bit of work with gays and lesbians, helping them to understand themselves. I do not judge them, but seek to help them understand why their sexual preference is what it is.

There are many factors influencing sexual preference.

Often, I have found that college students in the transition phase of coming out of the dependency of the family are thrust into a peer group of gays and lesbians at college. The gay and lesbian groups are one of the most self validating groups I have ever observed. The peer pressure to be a part of the group and conform to group norms is very strong. Often, individuals who are not gay but join the group due to the group validated sense of “self identity” become activists promoting the group cause as if they can convince others that the lifestyle is OK, then they can believe it themselves.

Again, I do not judge them.

Usually I can find the point in their lives where the environment stimulated the shift in the emotional subconscious pattern that generates gender sexual preference. Attraction or love is not caused by gender, but by the underlying masculine or feminine persona. The question is not one of gender attraction. The real question is “What caused the shift in dominant persona of masculine or feminine consciousness to be other than the gender norm?”

My research has revealed that there are many influencing factors. Just as autism/Asperger’s Syndrome has many factors which can cause the shift in consciousness to a super masculine or that MS is a shift toward the super feminine, irregardless of gender. It’s just that the predisposition for the gender means that the shift must be greater or lessor to reach the associated extreme associated with the diagnosis. This is why more males are autistic and more females have MS.

I can explain this in detail and demonstrate it in a scientific setting. It really is relatively simple.

It’s a legalistic phrase, not a scientific one.

I've not read nor researched this, but rumor has it that the older versions of the DSM (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders) classified homosexuality as a disorder.

The newer versions don't.

If that is true, then has science been advanced or defeated by our new politically correct societal norms?

Aristotle is quoted as having said: "The worst form of inequality is to try to make unequal things equal."

Good point, Aristotle, and how does that work out with mental health issues, society and behavior and human beings who can rationalize any want or behavior? The mental image of lemmings and a cliff comes to mind.

Personally, I'm way past ready for God to hit the cosmic "RESET" button. We've lost the map and have past the point of no return and I don't see how we come back from where we are and where we're headed.

Masculine consciousness is attracted toward feminine and feminine consciousness is attracted toward masculine consciousness in order to feel “whole” or “complete.” This is one of the strongest influencing factors in creating the chemistry we refer to as love.

Something as simple as parents wanting a son when they are having a daughter can influence gender identity. I’ve seen this pattern repeatedly in masculine females.

Another event often creating a shift in masculine/feminine consciousness occurs is when a mother experiences a painful loss either from the death of a child or a miscarriage prior to becoming pregnant. The fear of experiencing the pain again when they become pregnant hinders their ability to emotionally bond with the child in their womb. Emotional bonding is critical for normal development.

Single parenting is one of the strongest influences upon gender identity as it is virtually impossible for one parent to be both disciplinarian and compassionate caregiver. It destabilized the balance of masculine and feminine in the child’s foundation consciousness, often leading to a premature sense of self that is formed in the negative as emotional protection.

There are many influencing factors as every human being is unique. These are just a few of the more common factors I have encountered in my research.

When I was in college 20 years ago, I was young and impressionable and ready to accept all the standard leftist rubbish on homosexuality.

Then I got to know some, saw their lifestyles and heard their stories. Every one struggled with some major issue due to their homosexuality - serious disease, depression, addiction, extreme promiscuity, suicide attempts, violence (from other gays). I realized then why history has always considered homosexuality a mental health problem - because of the end result.

This was more than a student offering an opinion. This was a threat that any attempt to discuss this subject area frankly, would bring down the wrath of the entire campus Left. The speaker understood that.

Interesting explanation. I am taken back to a conversation that I overheard a few years ago. I was waiting in line at the New Orleans art museum waiting for the ticket office to open. The woman standing next to me was talking on her cell phone like she was alone.

She was telling someone how sorry she was that she “ chose” the lesbian lifestyle because it had left her lost and alone. She was physically very unattractive, under 5 feet tall and weighing at least 250 pounds. Not a woman that a man would be attracted to now that she was middle aged.

I had never given any thought that “ being gay” was a choice for some.

The idiots are apparently oblivious to the obvious fact that this is in utter contradiction to their dogma that sexual orientation is inborn and unchangeable.

And yet all you see on television nowadays is the deviation from this norm. They always portray atypical homosexuals, not the seriously depressed disease ridden mentally unbalanced norm.

Again, the entertainment media is driving this false impression of homosexuality, and it has been shifting public opinion towards favoring this terrible sickness.

The Homosexual lobby is so strong, the media is overlooking science and common sense if it proves that homosexuality is detrimental.

Now they want gay men to donate blood even though they are the biggest carriers of the AIDS virus. The rest of society has to suffer because Obama and the media want to prop up this deviant lifestyle.

I notice that when I see women in “that lifestyle” on tv, they are usually overweight, homely and shaped like a pool cue (think Rosie O’Donnell). I think simply that these women had no luck with men so they decide to try something else.

They would reply that a bisexual likes both sexes, and that this is inborn and unchangeable (as far as changing her to be exclusively hetero).
