Their most powerful potential opponents were religious groups, which could be easily predicted to coalesce into an Islamic state (not Islamic State).
Nobody at the time, including those who eventually formed it, knew the form it would take or that it would dub itself “Islamic State.”

The document was written in 2012, which makes it Obama’s strategy. It NEVER made sense to me why we should go after Assad. He’s definitely a dictator, but as dictators go, he’s the best the Middle East can usually hope for! Religious minorities were at peace under his rule, and he didn’t go after his enemies simply as sadistic sport (like Saddam did).
However, for some reason, Obama and McCain wanted him out at all cost. If we’re truly fighting ISIS, wouldn’t we be supporting Assad against them instead of helping them against him?
