THE FIRST STEP IN RESOLVING INTERPERSONAL CONFLICTS

C. W. Moore, in his book, The Mediation Process: Practical Strategies for Resolving Conflict defines conflict as "struggles between two or more people over values, or competition for status, power, or scarce resources." Experts in conflict management believe that conflict is inevitable in any organization or relationship. Many strategies have been developed to mediate and resolve organizational and interpersonal conflicts. What is usually missing in these mediation processes is a biblical understanding of the nature and causes of conflict. James 4:1-2 indicates that the causes of fights and quarrels among us come from our desires to win, to have our way, to get what we want, to control the outcome. Therefore, according to God's direction, the first step in resolving interpersonal conflicts requires a self-examination of our motives, desires, wants, positions, and interests. The Bible teaches us to look within, and discover our own faults, before trying to correct the faults of others. Matthew 7:3-5 illustrates this point, "And why do you look at the speck in your brother's eye, but do not consider the plank in your own eye? Hypocrite! First remove the plank from your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother's eye."

Although conflict is unavoidable, it is not always negative. In fact there are some very positive outcomes that can be derived through conflict. The Chinese form the symbol for "conflict" by combining two terms: danger and opportunity. Conflict can be a destructive experience, or the opportunity to clarify confusion, roles and expectations. Conflict always provides an opportunity to glorify God, to serve God, and to grow in grace. Conflict gives us a chance to show God that we love, respect, honor, and trust Him. It also allows us to demonstrate to others God's principles of love, forgiveness, and humility. Philippians 2:3-4 advocates a spirit of collaboration in dealing with conflicts in interpersonal relationships. That is, to place the thoughts, ideas, and feelings of others on par with our own. As Stephen Covey suggests, "Seek first to understand and then to be understood."

Conflict mediation techniques and strategies are very useful and necessary. However, God would have us include some more significant ingredients to the resolution processes the two "Great Commandments:" "To love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, mind, and strength ... and to love your neighbor as yourself" (Mark 12:29-31). Trust these two great commandments and they will take you where you need to go, imbue the right spirit within you, and direct you in the things you do.

CAPT Leroy Gilbert, CHC, USN

IT’S SUPPOSED TO BE SUNG

In 1826, the first new synagogue opened in Vienna since 1671, and a modernist rabbi, Isaac Mannheimer, was picked to head the congregation. He in turn chose a conservative cantor, Solomon Sulzer. The two men approached Beethoven for a piece for the synagogue’s dedication, but old Lou was too ill to take the commission.

Schubert was the one non-Jewish composer to get a commission for Sol’s new hymnal, “The Harp of Zion.” Frannie was raised Catholic, as was everybody in Austria’s theocracy, but as a friend of Schubert once said to him, “One god is too few for you.” Schubert had a great interest in Greek mythology, and several of his surviving operas are about the clash between Christianity and Islam in Dark Ages Spain. Schubert was free of the casual anti-Semitism rampant in Viennese society, and he probably took this commission for the money.

Ancient Hebrew poetry doesn’t have rhyme and meter, but is poetical prose. Traditional Jewish melodies flow freely and exist outside the straitjacket of Western bar lines. This posed a challenge for Schubert, whose career had been defined by setting German poetry to music. There were issues of accent and emphasis, and Sol walked Frannie through the Hebrew to give him an idea of how it should go. But Schubert’s musical attention to Hebrew prosody was impeccable.

This is for a capella chorus and cantor in C Major.

Schubert: Psalm 92, D. 953

I once played the organ for a Cantor for High Holiday Services in a Jewish Nursing home.

I had no sheet music or hymnal, just a prayer book with the order of service in English on one side and Hebrew on the other side.

With no rehearsal, I watched and listened to the Cantor and followed his eye and body movements and was able to accompany him by FEELING his inflections...up or down. It was quite and experience.

He kept asking me back every year. Oh...and the organ had been donated to the facility by the little Pentecostal Church where i had replaced it with my Hammond B3!

He Who blessed our forefathers Abraham, Isaac and Jacob - may He bless the fighters of the Israel Defense Force, who stand guard over our land and the cities of our G-d from the border of the Lebanon to the desert of Egypt, and from the Great Sea unto the approach of the Aravah, on the land, in the air, and on the sea.

May HASHEM cause the enemies who rise up against us to be struck down before them. May the Holy One, Blessed is He, preserve and rescue our fighting men from every trouble and distress and from every plague and illness, and may He send blessing and success in their every endeavor.

May He lead our enemies under their sway and may He grant them salvation and crown them with victory. And may there be fulfilled for them the verse: For it is Hashem, your G-d, Who goes with you to battle your enemies for you to save you.

G-d bless and keep your children safe, Alouette.

I've told the story about how in 1976 I accompanied a singer on the piano at a post-dinner gathering at a friend's house. (The singer later became a star on local TV in Portland and then as a columnist at the Oregonian.) In those days I could still sight read an unfamiliar piece without difficulty, and I learned how to breathe with my singer. She still remembers it.

My Uncle was at an installation in the Pacific during WW2, and who showed up but the Andrews Sisters...but no band or sheet music. Uncle Jack, who played by ear, ended up accompanying them for an entire show without any charts.

I accompany all my voice students, and i just make up arrangements, as my instant sight reading skills are not that great. I would much rather “breathe with the singer” as you so aptly described! :-)

If I could find more videos with both German and English translations of songs by Schubert, Schumann and Brahms, I would happily do a whole lieder series at the Canteen. FReepers would say, "Publius, take us to your lieder!

(ducking)

Good evening, Ex....((HUGS))...a Blessed Lord’s Day to you and yours.

My brother and his family are in southeast Texas and my niece texted a couple hours ago that “rain just got bad here”. Rivers overflowing near them.

You are safely up a hill, right?

Well, never let it be said that FReepers don’t have liedership qualities.

“Cant” is not in our vocabulary.

No Snow. They are working on the roads. Trail Ridge Road got opened Friday. It goes over 12,000 feet high. I am less than 7,000 so Summer gets here much sooner. Lots of rain this year. Do you get rain also?
