Actress Rashida Jones is best known for her work in “The Office” and “Parks and Recreation.” But her latest project, a documentary called “Hot Girls Wanted,” explores the amateur porn industry, which she says rakes in gobs of cash by exploiting the gullibility of young women who thirst for fame and fortune.
“So much stands in the way of them and that dream,” she tells Yahoo Global News Anchor Katie Couric. “And the things that stand in the way are not being fully explained to them. “Their naiveté is really important as an engine for the porn industry, or at least this part of the porn industry. That’s the problem.”
The film, which Jones produced, premiered at this year’s Sundance Festival. It takes its title from ads that commonly appear on Craigslist seeking “hot girls” for amateur porn, a genre whose name gives the impression that the films are not professionally produced.
“The truth is, it’s cast, it’s lit, it’s scripted; and most of the young girls who go into amateur porn are very young, which makes it seem like they might just be the girl next door,” Jones says.

A couple things stood out. This is a business that chews up girls fast and spits them out fast. The filmmakers profiled a handful of girls living in the filthy, suburban Miami home of a 23-year old "talent agent" who drives them from shoot to shoot, participates in some of the scenes himself and takes 10% of their earnings (on top of the rent he charges them). He's rolling in money.
The girls come from small towns in flyover country. They're working jobs waitressing or fast food, making minimum wage. They're not college bound. They've never gone anywhere or done anything exciting. They have dreams of making it huge in the business and then relocating to Hollywood to live a life of glamour.
In reality, they last on average about 3 months before fresh new faces arrive at Miami International Airport to replace them. At this point, their shelf-life can only be extended if they're willing to work in the far more degrading "extreme" porn films.
One scene that stuck out was when the girls say, "I don't want my friends or family to find out about this." and the "talent agent" replies, "They will. They always do. It takes about a month and then someone in your hometown who knows you will run across your video and from there it will spread quickly." At least he was being honest.
The scene where the 18-year old former cheerleading captain returns home for Christmas to Texas and her devastated parents was just heartbreaking.
By the end of the film, girls who had just three months prior thought they had the world at their fingertips are left broken, broke, humiliated shells of themselves and the talent agent has 8 brand-new 18-19 year old girls living at his house, paying rent.
Anyways, very well-done documentary if you can stomach the subject matter.

Years and years ago, a neighbor and I were down in Hollywood grabbing a couple of beers, and he said, “Now I’m gonna show you the saddest thing you ever seen in your life”. We went to the Greyhound station, as a bus was pulling in, with more than a few wide-eyed would-be ingenues stepping off.
He said, “Now, all these kids come here, thinking they’re gonna be movie stars. Most of them ain’t. More than a few will end up in porn” (the San Fernando Valley isn’t that far away, after all) “and after a few years, they’ll be back here, headed on the bus back home. I wanna warn ‘em, but you know what.......they ain’t gonna listen.”
He was an interesting neighbor, to say the least. I’m pretty sure he was a gangbanger, at the very least a dealer, but I never had any problems with him. In fact, he alerted me to a gang of thieves that was in cahoots with the apartment manager, and suggested I change the locks on my door. I followed his advice, and that was right neighborly of him.
He was also a huge science geek - he was entirely self-taught, but his bookshelves were filled with books on quantum physics, geology, astrophysics and the like, and he had the gift of explaining complex ideas in plain English.
A remarkable fellow, one I’ll likely never forget.
Whatever happened to that girl from Duke University, who claimed she had to do pornography to pay her high tuition? And claimed that if they had given her more financial aid, she wouldn’t be forced to do that?
She also made some bizarro statements about how females are empowered by porn, taking control of their sex lives, etc. and that she herself had been watching porn since age 11.
I think part of what is going on has to do with the whole sexual revolution since the ‘60s. Young people nowadays have been raised in a culture in which it’s considered ok to have sex with any number of partners, any gender of partners, and it’s ok to have recreational sex with someone, regardless of whether you are in a relationship with that person or not.
All of that feeds an idea in these girls minds that there is nothing wrong with doing pornography. The promise of some quick cash makes some people do this, sad to say.
Perhaps the worst part is that the rest of their lives are probably ruined. Who will want to hire or marry them after this? And the fact that these clips are on the Internet insure they will be around practically forever.

There's a scene in the film where the Texas cheerleader is trying to explain to her boyfriend (yes, she had one) that she was a porn star, not a prostitute.
His reply, "Is there really a difference? At least when a prostitute has sex for money, it's not going to be on the internet forever."
I’m saddened to hear about Belle Knox’ experiences. I do hope and pray, however, that she will somehow “see the light” after being chewed up and used by the porn business. And maybe use her experience to publicize the dangers.
Another poster said something about how will these girls ever have a normal life, get married, etc? Can you imagine being a young man, bring home Belle Knox to meet your mother????
And, what are the prospects of Belle Knox having a normal work life or career? Every job she may be hired for will be aware of her past. Her past will be hard to overcome. Sad to say, she may be an intelligent young woman, who will be passed over for opportunities because what she has done will live forever on the internet.
