Threatening floodwaters in Texas prompted the rescue of at least 200 cattle Sunday as cowboys and law enforcement led the herd on a 9-mile journey described by residents as a once-in-a-lifetime spectacle.
In Liberty County, outside of Houston, the animals were stranded for days on a 50-acre piece of land in the Liberty Bell Ranch that had become a shrinking island as the Trinity River flooded.
More than 10 inches of rain has fallen during the last month over eastern Texas, with some areas receiving up to 20 inches, KHOU reports.
So local rancher Pat Henscey rounded up 150 cowboys, air boaters, volunteers and police officers to assist in a rescue effort that began Sunday morning, the Houston Chronicle reports.
The cows were urged through water, and calves that couldnt swim were put on boats and carried to land. Some of the cattle drowned in deeper waters, although officials did not have an estimate as to how many.
By the time the herd reached the town of Dayton, hundreds of people lined the streets to witness the event and take photos.
"It's not every day you see a cattle drive going through a major highway going through downtown, Liberty County Sheriff's Capt. Ken DeFoor told the Houston Chronicle. You see that in the movies, but you don't see that in real life anymore.

Ha! Been living and trapsing around Texas my whole life, but have never been to JR’s place. I think I saw a sign to it once, saying it was a few miles off. Somewhere around Richardson or McKinney, I think. Practically right in the urbanity of Dallas.
Happens every spring and fall her in western ND.
traipsing: "to walk or go aimlessly or idly, or without finding or reaching one's goal"
Your whole life you've been doing this? Lol! :)
Due east of Plano, in Parker, TX.
THANK YOU!
OK and ?
I was just agreeing with Grams A that “that place” is NOT Texas- it’s a hollyweird set.
I lived in Texas for 35+ years in many locations.
Not sure what you travel path was but that place IS NOT Texas;)
Texas is a whole ‘nuther Country. And if it wishes can/may become just that. It’s in the State Constitution.
No visit to Dallas is complete without visiting the legendary Southfork Ranch. Viewers made themselves home at Southfork, the Texas ranch the Ewings called home and where the entire world was a weekly guest.
Today, Southfork continues to welcome visitors from around the world, who come to see where Dallas was filmed and to experience the lifestyle made famous by the Ewings.
I know where and what it is. I just have no interest in it. Way better things to do in Texas IMO.
OK, I get it. I thought you were saying the Southfork Ranch wasn't PHYSICALLY in Texas. Because, after checking, I learned there was a "JR Ranch" in some other state. JR Ranch is what I originally said I visited. Didn't recall at the time that the TV show set in Texas was called the Southfork Ranch.
Lol! There’s actually a BUNCH of “JR Ranches” throughout the US. No surprise, I guess, most of them likely taking off on the popularity of the TV series.
OK
Worked in Lubbock in the late 1980’s for a couple of months and used to drive the backroads from Sunray and Gruver through Amarillo and on to Hereford on business. First time I ever saw tumbleweeds bigger than my car. We drove through Lubbock last Christmas on the way back from Colorado having not been there for almost 30 years. Talk about change-didn’t even recognize the place. Just hate all the windfarms. First thought was “what have we allowed to happen in our state?”.
Grandson working in Quitaque for a while. Said it’s so flat that if you stand on a rock out there on a clear day you can see clear to Fort Worth.
All the years I lived there and still have so many places I never got to go. Dang pesky irritating having to WORK screwing up My travel plans!
Never made it to Big Bend or the Pan Handle, covered most of the rest.
Cowboys and volunteers saved over 500 cattle stranded by flooding in Liberty, Texas, on Sunday, May 31. The herd was stuck on a 40 acre island, created by rising waters of the Trinity River.

Fun stuff.
And when I mentioned trapsing through Texas, I’ve probably traveled (driving) through 75% of the state’s towns and farm-roads. No exaggeration. The most out-of-the-corner spots. I used to shoot photos of old buildings and such, checking out the various histories, always taking different routes so I’d check out even the tiniest little towns.
The only part of the state I never really got around to exploring was south Texas.
My heros have always been Cowboys.
