OK, there was a movie in the late 60’s, anti Vietnam war, where it showed a guy doing this very thing to avoid the draft.
It was a documentary, not actors. 22 caliber rifle shot. Yes the pain was more than anticipated.

Enough people do this sort of thing by error or simple clumsiness, why would anybody do it on purpose?
If you want to know what some situation may feel like, look to the experience of others who have undergone the agony, and resolve to learn from THEIR acts and the consequences.
Obviously, this person lacks, in very large measure, the capability of critical thinking.
