U.S. Troops Face Eating, Drinking Restrictions During Ramadan
weekly standard ^ | 6/26/15 | Heryl Bier

A top commander in southwest Asia reminded U.S military personnel stationed in Muslim countries in the Middle East of the restrictions placed on them during Ramadan. According to a report by the U.S. Air Forces Central Command Public Affairs, Brig. Gen. John Quintas, 380th Air Expeditionary Wing commander in Southwest Asia, said that the U.S. is "committed to the concepts of tolerance, freedom and diversity." But he added that soldiers should "become more informed and appreciative of the traditions and history of the people in this region of the world... [R]emember we are guests here and that the host nation is our shoulder-to-shoulder, brothers and sisters in arms, risking their lives for our common cause to defeat terrorism."

During the 30-day religious celebration of Ramadan, even non-Muslims are expected to obey local laws regarding eating, drinking, and using tobacco in public. Violators can be fined up to $685 or receive two months in jail. A spokesperson for United States Central Command [CENTCOM] said that "we are not aware of any specific instances of anyone being arrested" for such violations.

\For military personnel outside of U.S.-controlled areas, the only exceptions for the rules are for those "performing strenuous labor." Such personnel are "authorized to drink and consume as much food as they need to maintain proper hydration and energy." It is unclear what constitutes "strenuous labor" or whether additional exceptions might be made during a heatwave affecting some areas of the region that has taken hundreds of lives.

Gen. John Quintas should be court marshaled for imposing a religion on troops. The quaint “we are guests”..... really John - show me the fukin invitation asshole...This is the limp wristed leadership the volunteers are forced to be exposed to. THE NAMBY PAMBY HEARTS AND MINDS CREW. The let people fight and die FOR NOTHING CREW.

The sole JOB of the military is to HUNT AND KILL BAD GUYS. Let the gender confused state department take care of the public relations and confused foreign non-existant policy.

Spend more time hunting and killing the jihadis jerkoff. Next thig you know this soft spoken effeminate looking obama general will be on the cover of VOGUE.. Keep politics and religion OUT OF THE MILITARY...

When a family member was deployed to Kuwait, said family member was restricted to base during the entirety of Ramadan.

I do not like it, have never liked it, and will never like it, but on November 4, 2008 The American people went to the polls to elect a leader. A majority, particularly the young said, via their votes, that they wanted a muslim to rule them. To dispel the notion that this was a fluke, on November 6, 2012, they affirmed that this was their desire. So there you have it. I don’t like it but I guess things happen that way.

Could you in good conscience encourage any young, straight white male to join the US military today?

Nope. Not anymore.

Serious question, not a joke. Could you in good conscience encourage any young, straight white male to join the US military today?

No. In fact, I actively discouraged someone who wanted to join the Marines (friend of family). They're now back in school getting a bachelor's degree in architecture (hello, George Costanza!).

I spent the first 30 years of my life around and in the military and a third of that overseas. I lived in Turkey, Saudi Arabia and many others. I traveled throughout the world and have been to most ismalic countries. I NEVER had a single military commander restrict my dress or food or anything else like this.

This reeks of Obama and his handler’s islamic religions.

How tough could it be to fast under their rules? If a muslim can do it anyone can.

I had a muslim convenience store owner in Northern Canada tell me that Christians didn’t know how to fast.

“In a muslim fast nothing, even a pencil, can touch our lips.”

He left out the part about their fast only lasting while the sun was up, and that as soon as it was down they had a BIG meal, then “fasted” again the next day while the sun was up. In northern Canada the sun isn’t up for very long either.

He made himself out to be a pious martyr for his “superior” manner of fasting.

I said “Well good for you.” What I didn’t tell him was I had been fasting for four days—four 24-hour days—with NO food, NO water, and NO evening reprieve meal. The attitude I had from my fast prevented me from one-upping him (as it should have).

Not to gloat, but I think that Christians DO know how to fast.

Because the policy is BS or because you don’t believe the policy is real?

They need to head on over to the German NATO camps. Plenty of booze available.

When I was teaching in Turkey, during Ramadan the university kept the cafeteria open. However, they closed off half the dining area, and there weren't many people in the part that was open. Most of the faculty and staff were fasting. Regardless, the university kept the place open for those of us who weren't Muslim and didn't need to fast. I appreciated that.

No, we were in Abu Dhabi. I walked into a hotel bar and saw a bunch of arabs sitting at tables with cans of Fosters wrapped in napkins. If allah can’t see the label, it’s not a sin.
