Ted Cruz was unambiguous in his praise of John McCain on Saturday, calling his fellow senator a "hero" soon after Donald Trump made inflammatory remarks about the Arizona senator's war record.
But the senator from Texas refused to join other 2016 Republican hopefuls in denouncing the real estate mogul.
Trump sparked an uproar when he suggested at the Family Leadership Summit in Ames, Iowa, that McCain wasn't a war hero because he was captured. "He is not a war hero," Trump said at a question-and-answer session. "He is a war hero because he was captured. I like people that weren't captured, OK? I hate to tell you. He is a war hero because he was captured. OK, you can have -- I believe perhaps he is a war hero."
He later tried to clean up his comments, but a wave of Republicans had already condemned Trump's remarks.
For his part, Cruz told reporters he considers McCain "a friend" whom he respects and admires.
"Not only did he sign up to defend our nation, putting his life in harm's way, but when he was a POW, he was imprisoned, tortured, and most incredibly, he was offered the opportunity for early release, he was offered the opportunity to go home, and he turned it down because he believed it would be dishonorable to accept that."
But he declined to speak ill of his presidential rival...
"You know I recognize that folks in the press love to see Republican-on-Republican violence, and so you want me to say something bad about Donald Trump, or bad about John McCain or bad about anyone else," he said. "I'm not going to do it." (snip)

Half of what the Democrat operatives at CNN do is asking Republicans to condemn other Republicans. Cruz is wise to not take part in the charade. (Ever hear of CNN asking Democrats to condemn other Democrats.)
Trump is looking like a man who listened to Ronald Reagan’s 11th Commandment. He follows the Great Communicator in many ways, including not speaking ill of a fellow republican.
ping
The Eleventh Commandment (Ronald Reagan): “Thou shalt not speak ill of any fellow Republican.”
Ted Cruz is just drawing upon a very reliable source.
Criticism is not at all the same as “speaking ill”, for the truth is sometimes much more harsh than any lie. But there may be constructive criticism, and criticism that only springs from an ad hominem source, and is completely irrelevant to the argument at hand.
Truth, justice, and the American way. What ever happened to those words?
Superman: I’m here to fight for truth, and justice, and the American way.
Lois Lane: You’re gonna end up fighting every elected official in this country!
They fools should just say Trump misspoke but they do not want to talk about the issues .McCain called Trump supporters crazies how many of them served honorably in the service..McCain is a loud mouth and has hidden behind his service record..If Trump did not misspeak he is in trouble..
The liberals love of McCain is sincere. They loved setting him up to be the fall guy in 2008. And they loved tearing him to shreds during the 2008 general election. There’s a lot of love there.
McCain isn’t a Republican, so why is it wrong to attack him? I don’t care if he was the one who put the flag up on Iwo Jima. It’s time to attack the SOB as the scumbag he is.
I do love Cruz’s gentlemanly, kind heart. He will not attack anyone personally, but expect him to be very candid when it comes to the record of other candidates.
That is exactly how it should be. It is a disgrace that Walker hired Brad Dayspring who is known for using every dirty trick in the book to destroy Conservatives. You are judged by your associations.
I just listened to Cruz’s townhall forum in Ames, Iowa, with Frank Luntz that was on C Span. He was on his toes as usual and the crowd responded with four standing ovations.
Watch as the liberal's love of Jeb Bush plays out in soviet Red Hampshire in the near future...
Walker may be an amnesty pimp. There is another thread on this topic. I doubt he would want to team up with Trump and Cruz.
Can anyone here see that photo and still insist on McCain’s “hero” status?
Whose hero?
Not America’s by any stretch!
I’d love to see him replace Ruth Bader Ginsberg on the bench..
Won’t happen though as she has decided to retire before Obama leaves office... to prevent a possible Republican president from naming her replacement.
Ted, like most experienced speakers, is aware that sometimes, you can say a lot by actually saying very little.
This is one of those times.
Cruz was smart and classy. Smart not to allow the media to drag im into this mess and classy for not disparaging a former POW.
“McCain apparently likes to start a fight and then hides behind the medias skirts when Trump hit back.”
It does sound like a planted question, come to think of it.
It is obvious Trump is not afraid to say what he thinks. Kind of what you want in a leader who is out to defend a countries welfare.
I was trying to think of a time when “war hero” McCain ever helped Cruz.
*******
Yeah, well 82, I wouldn’t spend too much time on that one.

“McCain isnt a Republican....”.
Neither is Donald Trump. I wonder what cabinet post Hillary Clinton promised him if he ran as a spoiler in 2016.
