He’s always had the big ego. That’s why his military record is filled with disciplinary actions. His father was an Admiral so he got away with stuff that other pilots were kicked out for doing.
Remember when he accepted the nomination he said “I was a hot shot fighter pilot but they broke me.” He was afraid the other side was going to tell the truth about him. They didn’t have to do it. All they had to do was threaten him and he threw the election and threw Palin under the bus.
