In a July 23 interview published in the New York Observer, actor Richard Dreyfuss said he would like to rewrite the 2nd Amendment to make it clear it applies to the militia rather than individual rights.

Richard, just because you live in a big mansion with security, does not mean the single mom living in a bad neighborhood does not need a gun to protect her family.

The Militia used to be all of the able-bodied people, because they had a common interest in freedom. Dreyfuss wants the Militia to be who the Government, and especially the Democratic Party, say they are.
I say: The government has suppressed any patriotic militias for years. Only right wing middle aged nuts participate in any patriotic militia, and maybe motorcycle gangs. On the other hand, for whatever reason—fear or support—Muslim militias, black power militias, black and hispanic gangs like the Bloods and Crips, or even the Aryan Brotherhood in prison—they are strong. Normal citizens are unorganized, and organization is discouraged. Gangs are the new militia.

Richard Doofus has an upside down understanding of the purpose of the 2nd.
The founders clearly wanted the people to have the means to resist and change the government they were setting up if it should become tyrannical. Our Declaration Of Independence says we have the right to alter or abolish. The people would not have the means if the government controlled all the guns.
They did not want all guns in the hands of the government, quite the opposite.

Richard Dreyfus proudly traces his ancestry to the famous Alfred Dreyfus, who was sent to Devil’s island on false charges of treason. It was widely speculated that this was due to antisemitism because Dreyfus was a Jew. Europe has a nasty tradition of armed “militia” attacking unarmed Jews and doing nasty things to them.
History might have been very different if these Jews had been armed citizens.
Just sayin’.
A militia isn’t really a militia unless they are already armed. If they have no weapons nor prior experience, they are known as “cannon fodder”.

OK. We can rewrite the 1st Amendment so religious freedom only applies to Christianity and freedom of the press only applies to the printed word.
By the way, Stupid Actor, the militia is the People, not the National Guard. According to federal law it is nominally all men who are not in the military between the ages of 17 and 45. There is no drill requirement for that, so you’d have to issue weapons to a lot of men if you got your amendment passed.
