Gun silencer sales are on fire.

The number of registered silencers surged 38% from last year to 792,282 in February 2015, according to the most recent figures from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. There were 571,750 licenses in March 2014.

"It's getting to be more mainstream," said Josh Waldron, CEO of SilencerCo, which makes and sells silencers.

This story hits home for me. In the past month, I bought 2 suppressors. Hopefully the wait is not too long!

What “wait”?

The wait for the tax stamp. The average wait time is 4 months or more depending on how you file. Maybe less but not often.

Because it's nice to shoot quiet guns. Suppressors are NFA items (like full-auto weapons), so there's some red tape involved.

Target practice with a silencer is much more pleasing than without. Even with hearing protection my 45 still hurts.

Just got my first “Tax Stamp”. The suppressor has been released from jail. It took just under 4 months. Getting ready to submit the paper work for a Silencerco-45-Osprey for my H&K USP45. It will be a nice Christmas present to myself.

why do we need silencers?

For the health of the shooter. Hearing loss is irreversible.

They minimize recoil, allowing for better follow up shots.

They minimize sound, helping shooters who may develop a flinch.

They do not scare wildlife.

They make for good neighbors when gun ranges are close to communities. People are far less likely to complain.

Those are just a few of the reasons.

That looks like the Osprey 45! If so, that is the one I am now waiting on. Cannot wait!

Media bringing it up for shock value.

Average low information person, “what! you mean those nasty things on TV are legal?”

Someone is going to kick Crazy Joe awake and here we go.

The blogger Ferfal, who writes about life after the collapse, says that among the most important things you need are silencers and kevlar.

"why do we need silencers? do we need permit to get them?"

New Zealand requires them to hold down noise pollution. Guns are really really loud. Ask any long time shooter. (Get close and shout. They are a little deaf.)

You need a permit because suppressors are scary, and it's a given, to liberals, that only mob killers and CIA assassins would want one. They watch TV so they know these things. Back in 1934, they established a federal system, and gave the task of enforcing it to the guys who had just been thrown out of work chasing bootleggers. This made it as hard and as expensive as possible to get one, short of actually and illegally banning them.

Besides, anyone can actually build one in an afternoon, with a modeler's table lathe, and a bagful of copper rivets.

You can legally build one if you pay the $200 Tax Stamp. If I am going to pay that, I am going to get a suppressor made by experts.

I received my “can” last September after waiting 9 mos for the ATF to approve it.

The wait time has improved considerably. I just got my SBR in April after a 6 month wait.

“Why do we need silencers?”

Why do we need mufflers on cars, trucks and motorcycles? We would be safer if we heard them coming.

Nice

I just purchased an H&K tactical 45. It has the option for a can as well.

Still mulling over the @ $1,000 investment though...
