In Germany, the government taxes Catholics and Protestants and doles out the money to the churches their share of the tax. Which is why a lot of non-practicing Catholics and Protestants are opting out of the churches. Years ago, a German lady married to a retired colonel who was still living in Germany was grousing about the Church In the USA where her daughter lived for some reason I do not recall. She was greatly surprised to learn that in American churches contributions are voluntary. Her daughter, raised in Germany, gave nothing. In the USA the bishops have come more and more to depend on the government for hand-outs. The governments have done this because organizations like Catholic Charities give better serve for less cost than government agencies. That seems to be coming to an end. The Obama administration is moving to drive the churches out of social work if they don’t toe the party line on social issues.
