Just a little more than a year after it opened, the Moreland Farmers Pantry is closing.
Residents of Portland's Westmoreland neighborhood were originally excited for the arrival of a 5,000-square-foot store stocked -- as it advertised -- with non-genetically modified products. But excitement turned to anger for some after comments on the owner's personal Facebook page were made public.
In a 2013 post by owner Chauncy Childs, operating under a pseudonym, she said that although she doesn't judge gay people or their desire to be married, and it isn't her place to form opinions about their lifestyle, she thought gay marriage would cause our civilization to "disintegrate because we are abandoning our principles as a society."
According to a July 2014 KOIN-TV article, business at the store was slow after it opened, possibly because of a boycott. Meanwhile, the owners Childs and her husband John Childs tried to make it clear that their personal views as members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints wouldn't affect how they ran their store.
The market also hired gay workers: "I'm gay and I work at Moreland Farmers Pantry," wrote a woman in the Portland Mercury's I, Anonymous blog. She said she and her co-workers, some of whom were also gay, were tired of people shouting obscenities at the store, accusing them of being homophobes.
Reaction to the grocer's looming closure has been varied. Some were ecstatic: One Facebook user wrote, "This is so freaking awesome. Bigotry doesn't sell in Portland." Others were disappointed: "I am so so sad to see that things have come to a close at MFP. I hope everyone who boycotted the store realizes how much they did for gay rights (notice the sarcasm)."

The witless never bore me.
What, and force people through the doors?
They made statements that apparently turned people off from visiting the store. Maybe people went to the store and decided to not come back for another reason. Many businesses fail because people haven’t thought out if there was a need or market for what they were selling. Opening in a very liberal city and starting off by saying gay marriage is going to cause civilization to crumble sure didn’t do them any favors.
Stop it.
And they call themselves tolerant.
True enough, but can I recommend you read "Demonic" by Ann Coulter. It will shed some light on the topic of mob thugary for you.
I’m so sick of Portland and its evil twin Seattle that if the Russians nuked them today, I would call that a plus.
Between the gays and the commies, our cities are becoming sexual and Marxist cesspools of Left Intolerance and economic ignorant/decline.
I wonder how the store’s gay employees really feel about the vocal gay leftists. I hope they sue the schmucks over losing their jobs. That would be a “first” but I would support it.
having employees and customers accosted by the homo mafia drives business away
which they’ve been doing all over the country (prolly less so up there)
we’re in a cultural civil war right now. it just hasn’t gone ‘hot’ yet. having the federal govt destroy a PRIVATE business for NOT doing something is absurd.
then again, can we do the same for the federal govt... as they refuse to adhere to the law (in so many ways)
Yep.

Welcome to Decadent America!
The truth is California was first invaded by eastern liberals. California was at one time a western state, with Cowboys and everything !! ...But you have to be pretty old to remember it that way.
Also known as the "Socialist Utopia".
It may be convenient to blame the store closing on a boycott, but the fact is even the big chain grocery stores have a lot of competition and exist on thin margins. Portland is already served by chains like Whole Foods, so this grocery store was hardly unique. And, being an independent, probably had higher costs which it tried to pass along to the customers. Even without the owner making anti-gay statements, I would have been very surprised to see this grocery store succeed.
Would you care to explain my comment about the storekeepers? I believe I made a reasonable suggestion based on the reality of the situation only to be told I was ignorant and hijacking the thread. Not nice. not nice at all.
I am making an observation based on what is going on today ... I am not commenting on anything you said.
A pieced together meme doesn’t provide any evidence to back up your original statement.
Gays are a yawn...
Most of you I have never met, although some have been here 15 years or more. The comments and general dystopia is like being in an alternative FR universe. Strange comments, stranger attitudes. PC is alive and well in these ranks.
