Last week Matt Gonzalezattorney of alleged gunman Juan Francisco Lopez-Sanchezagreed with testimony that Lopez-Sanchez allegedly shot Kathryn Steinle but argued that it was the guns fault.
He suggested the gun went off without the trigger being pulled because it has no safety.
Steinle was shot and killed with a stolen handgun on July 1 while walking on San Franciscos Pier 14 with her father.
According to the Associated Press, Lopez-Sanchezs defense to this point has been that he shot Steinle accidentally. The defense argued that Lopez-Sanchez found the gun wrapped in a t-shirt. He picked it up and it went off.

Said by “sources” who have been buried, to have been the personal firearm of a federal park ranger.
Said to be a Sig-Sauer .40 cal. This would, if true, be the SIG-SAUER P226.
The SIG-SAUER P226 has a decocking lever. The gun was said to be reported stolen when the ranger’s car was stolen.
You chamber a round by the slide, and when you do the hammer is brought back ready to fire, right then. With the de-cocking lever engaged you can safely “de-cock” the firearm, either by pulling the trigger or pulling the trigger while gently lowering the hammer with your thumb.
Either way- there IS a safety. There is NO way this dude found a loaded SIG-SAUER that was “hammer back” ready to fire and wrapped in a shirt. And also— no way that “3 shots went off one after the other”. The trigger had to be pulled in every instance, whether de-cocked (and thus the trigger has to be pulled with harder pull) or not (and the trigger would have to be pulled to fire the weapon).
This lawyer is a complete LIAR. Sure “no safety” but instead a de-cocking lever which IS the safety.
I was explaining the various safeties on various guns to my daughter. My Springfield has the palm safety and the trigger safety. I had no logical explanation for the safety on the trigger!

Senor Gonzalez is a perfect example of the damage decades of infirmative action have done to the reputations of law schools, to the credibility of the ABA and to the integrity of the Bar exam.
Thanks.....
The lawyer, Gonzalez, was considered too far left when he ran for mayor a few years ago, but he came close to winning. Permanent rent control was a feature of his platform.
My personal thinking on the Glock safety is that it is a cost option that proved to be cheaper than having a frame mounted safety. I have 4 of them (17, 19, 21 and 26) and they’re fine guns but they can’t be treated like a gun with a real frame-safety IMO.
If you carry around a Glock in your holster in Condition 1, you’d damned sure better know what you’re doing is about all I can say.
I’ve got a 938 for CC. Safety just like a 1911. Nice.
one problem with our ‘advocacy’ system of law is that defense counsel feel obligated to come up with any arguments they possibly can for their clients, no matter how absurd
and no, I do not know a better legal system, just saying...we have to expect far-fetched theories like this
My first love is the 1911, followed by all manner of revolvers.
I tend to shy away from polymers, alloys and composites just because I’m a stubborn old bastard and my grand daddy din’t hear no nothing about no “alloys” or “polymers”.
Just steel, good ole American steel that clanks and thuds when they hit the floor, not clacking like some kid toy you dropped. :0)
I agree they’re great, I have a P220 in .38 Super and a P227 in .45.
I seem to recall that the initial explanation was that he was just shooting at the sea lions and a stray bullet hit her.
Yes, and of course the poor immigrant who pointed the gun but did not think the bullet would come out of the end of the gun with the hole in it and did check to see whether around was chambered and did not buy the gun and did not steal the gun but instead found the gun and who doesn’t know guns from popsicles....he would have been smart enough to engage the safety. Right?
Trigger safety is so that when holstered, you’re less likely to discharge firearm with an accidental brushing against clothing or hands.
Yep that mean mean ol gun just got into his poor little illegal alien hands and fired itself, that fiend
He isn’t. He’s hoping that the judge and jury are that stupid, and probably figures that the press have his back.
So simply put and so elegant.
I must remember that one.
I can sort of see that, but with a 6.5 lb trigger pull - brushing it against something isn’t going to do it I wouldn’t think. I’m sure the people that designed it have there reasons and they are smarter than me! While I always keep my finger off the trigger, I also am keenly aware of keeping away from the palm safety.
