Jonah Goldberg and the Anti-Trumpians – Part 2 (another great Nolte article!)
breitbart.com ^ | 9/12/15 | John Nolte

Posted on 09/13/2015 6:24:28 AM PDT by cotton1706

On the digital pages of National Review, Jonah Goldberg responded at length to the many criticism/rebuttals he received in response to a G-File published last week where he sank his teeth into Republican frontrunner Donald Trump and his supporters.

Like everything Jonah writes, you should read the whole thing. This is a good debate; healthy for the Party and the movement. Unlike many who share his point of view, Goldberg is engaging in a spirited, not mean-spirited, discussion.

One party Goldberg responds to is yours truly. Goldberg takes “particular exception” to what I wrote here…

To his credit, Goldberg doesn’t hurl names at Trump’s supporters but his sneering (and surprisingly clueless) incredulity does boil them down to unthinking, knee-jerk cretins.

…and responds in part with what an accusation of hypocrisy:

He gives me credit for not hurling insults and then says I’m insulting people anyway in effect because I’m saying things they don’t want to hear. Look, I don’t think all of Trump’s fans are unthinking, knee-jerk cretins. Far from it. But I do think they’re wrong.

From the article:

To wit: I don’t think Trump is a conservative. I don’t think he’s a very serious person. I don’t think he’s a man of particularly good character. I don’t think he can be trusted to do the things he promises.

That is exactly how Trump supporters view The Establishment. In fact, it is a PERFECT description of a Republican Establishment that for two decades has grown the size of the federal government, refused to secure the border, attacked the Tea Party, surrendered to Democrats, and appeased our evil media at almost every opportunity (see a full list of GOP sins at Conservative Treehouse).

Exactly!!

I don’t think Trump is philosophically conservative, but he is philosophically American.

That puts him head and shoulders above most of the pack who are multi-national politicians.

And that makes him different...how?

All that is true and more. The difference is that Trump is not part of the cabal running things. Trump is taking the fight to the media.

I am ambivalent about a Trump presidency. But I am enjoying the Trump campaign immensely. It is a breath of fresh air compared to the born losers we have been subjected to for the last thirty years. Republicans have only won since Reagan when the democrats have nominated an even bigger loser.

That is a very good way of putting it.

At this point in history, it’s better to have a nationalist moderate than a corportist mainline GOP “conservative”. I don’t doubt Trump will disappoint us on social issues but if somebody doesn’t deal with immigration, trade and the military it won’t matter.

My feeling is that Trump would turn out like Arnold Schwarzenegger turned out in California - ineffective in turning the enormous ship of state that is modern government.

Bingo!

The pols that Establishment pundits like Goldberg do trust are the ones who can be trusted not to do whatever they occasional have to promise to the despised base during primary season.

I think Trump has been a closet conservative in a liberal town for a long time. His conservatism may be eclectic and not well polished, but I think he listens to experts in the respective fields.

There is one thing about Trump:

You either ‘love’ him or ‘hate’ him....

I love him! He is a breath of fresh air on a Spring Morning, he isn't ‘owned’ by anyone but himself, he says what he thinks, if you attack him, he's a viper and he'll bite back hard and fast, he's strong, he has his own style, and he doesn't care either way what you think, unless your a candidate...

I can't get enough of him, and it doesn't matter what he says or does, I am behind him 100%...I liked him even before he announced his running...

As a POTUS, he will heal this Nation, he will make it rich, he will help and protect the Vets, he will make the Military strong, he will down size Government, he will build a wall (and the illegal immigrants will be running away from here like fleas), and he will not put up with b.s. from any foreign country...

Will he go to war? I don't know, but those that think he's a wimp, will soon find out that they had better think long and hard about it....(that's why he wants a bigger, better and stronger Military)...

You don't have to approve of my assessment on Trump as I don't have to approve of your disapproval....we are, anyway at this very sec, a free country and can say what we feel...

The GOPe, media, talking heads, washington carter, ‘sewer city’ are afraid of him....the muslim in chief will do anything to stop Trump from taking office, even enacting martial law, or having something terrible happen to Trump, he will probably after he gets the nomination, have every individual of the IRS, CIA, FBI, world government official, look, dig, lie, cheat, steal to make his life hell...

So we are on a roller coaster ride, right now not so bad, but wait for a few more months and things are going to get really wild....and that's when your going to see how Trump gets what he wants, and how he does it...

Except for grandiosity, I see little in common between those two men’s personalities. I think too that Trump’s -need- to win will make him a far more able executive than Schwarzenegger.

I agree. He seems to be driven to achieve deeds rather than order and comprehend theory. He is not an ideologue, but he is more of a thinker than he is portrayed or chooses to project. He is “misunderestimated”, and likes it that way IMO.

For some reason neither Jonah nor his mom like Trump. I think he will be a good POTUS. He loves America.

Sure. Trump can do no wrong. Ann Coulter said she’d back him even if he personally performed abortions on the White House lawn.
