At 27 percent nationally, Donald Trump maintains his frontrunner status among Republican primary voters, but Ben Carson is now close behind him, a new CBS News/New York Times poll finds.
Carson's support has risen significantly since early August, from 6 percent then, to 23 percent now, putting him in second place. John Kasich and Carly Fiorina have also seen their support rise in this poll, although both remain in single digits.
Some candidates have not fared as well, losing support since August. Jeb Bush (six percent) and Scott Walker (two percent) have now dropped into single digits in this poll. Rick Perry, who announced he was withdrawing his candidacy while the poll was in progress, receives just one percent of Republican primary voters' backing.

Sadly, you are probably right.
Carson 2016!
For Surgeon General.
I like Carson and would vote for him but I don’t think America wants another black president right now. Obama has been a bad experience.
CBS News/New York Times poll. I think that clearly explains it all. THEY want Carson to displace Trump and must have selectively polled unwitting people. Neither of these media outlets have any credibility on anything.
Trump is filling stadiums and dominating all the news cycles.
Now Carson is a legitimate number two. He spoke to 6,500 people in California a few days ago. Bigger crowds than any other non-Trump GOP candidate. But I think Carson is riding the "non politician" wave and that many of his supporters will eventually move over to Trump.
I THINK YOU NAILED IT there...!
I think this poll was taken before he announced an amnesty plan. Next one should be quite telling.
Another entry in the Wile E. Coyote Trump frustration contest. Not so strong; this one won’t get many votes.
Many of those who view Trump as vulgar and misogynistic still want a complete outsider to take on Washington. They see Carson as thoughtful, intelligent, and nice.
People who are not political animals don’t really care about things like positions or policies. They make decisions based on personality and sound bites. Especially this early in the race.
Trump is the loud, abrasive outsider. Carson is the soft-spoken, nice outsider. Both should be a warning sign to Washington.
Trump 27%
Carson 23%
and the rest of the Republican field are at 6% or less. Several are not even moving the meter at 0% [Jindal, Pataki, Graham, Gilmore].
Many of those still hanging on will be like Perry — they won’t even leave ripple of support when they drop out.
[Perry is still included in the poll, at 1%.]
The bottom 8 candidates (including Perry) are garnering a total of 5%.
Ben Carson is ‘Mr. Likeable” in the first GOP debate, doesn’t do anything to produce any headlines and suddenly is neck and neck with Trump? Absolutel 100% bullsh*t!

CBS News/New York Times push poll
They also have Trump at 27 percent. The last average of all polls had him at 33 percent and Ben Carson at 20 percent.
“Seriously, what block of the GOP is supporting Carson?”
The Chamber of Commerce Establishment. Ben’s sounding as bad as Fiorina on Immigration.
