"..The first excellently radical idea Ive heard in months came Monday from the struggling campaign of Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker who made a name for himself by taking onand repeatedly beatingpublic sector unions in Wisconsin.
Walker is calling for ending union representation of all federal government employees (FDR and even the former head of the AFL-CIO would agree), making all workplaces right-to-work unless a particular state votes differently, shutting down the National Labor Relations Board (which has turned into one of the most effective cudgels of the Obama administrations ceaseless attack on business), barring automatic withdrawal of union dues from paychecks(to the extent that the dues go to fund political activities), and for various changes to union organizing methods(changes which union bosses wont like one bit).
Its smart politics for a man who has gone from a GOP front-runner to running on fumes; from first in polling in Iowa to seventh in less than two months. But more important(to me, if not to Walker)than the politics is the radicalness of the messagewhich I mean as a high compliment.
An AP article anticipating Walkers announcement noted that experts were taken aback by the scope of Walker's proposals. A professor of labor law is quoted thusly: Ive never seen anything like this. This will take the breath away from anyone whos worked in labor relations for any length of time....Its pretty draconian.
Hallelujah!
Its time for Republicans to start taking experts aback, time to take away the breath of status-quo statists of both parties and the reporters, editors, and pundits who support them whether out of intention or inertia. Not with narrow, populist appeals to emotion and misunderstanding but with policy positions aimed at waking Americans up to how far our political system, under Democrats and Republicans alike, has drifted from supporting limited government and liberty and instead become their chief opponent.

Where’s your “fundamental change” now, union (D)’s?
"...For example, Walker wants to do away with exclusive representation which allows a union that wins a workplace election to be the sole representative for all workers there. But he also is proposing moving union elections from the NLRB to a different board that primarily focuses on airline and railroad disputes. Elections wouldnt be necessary if exclusive representation was eliminated, Dau-Schmidt said."
"........A new Gallup poll released Friday shows why this matters. It found union members are significantly less satisfied than nonmembers about their job security, flexibility of hours, and recognition for their achievements.".....
Union leaders are livid. Tony Reardon, president of the National Treasury Employees Union that represents 150,000 federal workers, said Walker is declaring a war on middle-class workers. And Democratic presidential contender Hillary Rodham Clinton accused him of bullying union members.
"The National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) has become a lightning rod for controversy under President Obama, with its aggressive actions fueling sustained warfare between business and labor."
March 31, 2015: Obama vetoes NLRB legislation
"In one of his first clashes with the new Republican-dominated Congress over labor policy, President Obama vetoed a GOP-backed resolution Tuesday that would halt a National Labor Relations Board rule making it easier for workers to hold so-called ambush union-organizing elections.
It was Mr. Obamas second veto since Republicans took control of the Senate in January, following his rejection in February of a measure that would have expedited the construction of the Keystone XL oil pipeline...."
Sept 2, 2015: NLRB and Small Business: Tensions Heightened Under Obama
"The National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) has pushed for rules that critics argue have favored unions and targeted the small business community. The board's latest controversial decision came last week, in a ruling that makes employers liable for labor violations committed by business partners and contractors.
The Hill reported five other NLRB rulings that were decided during President Obama's tenure that were against the best interest of small business. Theres perhaps no labor board that has done more for organized labor than this one has, Michael Lotito, an employment and labor attorney, told the The Hill. The labor board has really put the wind back in the sails of unions, said Beth Milito, NFIB Senior Legal Counsel, according to The Hill....."
Wouldn’t that be a war on UPPER middle class “workers”? What with the salaries they’re being paid...
Last sentence:
. . . really the only purpose of the Republican Party is to move America back toward being a country conceived in liberty by men who were truly radicals, and thank goodness for that.
Liberty is quite gone. Sending good men and women to institutions so far corrupted from their constitutional design is worse than pointless; it gives the patina of legitimacy to tyranny.
Excellent idea. I hope Trump seriously considers Walker for a top spot in his administration.
Credit where it’s due. An interesting proposal. And it would definitely knock the left back on it’s heels. I don’t think it’s the stuff that a presidential campaign should be based on because unions just don’t rank high on folks priority list on the national level. Still, it would be good as part of a successful presidency. Organizations that are fighting for their survival are not going to be spending so much time on other issues. Scott Walker would be a great Secy of Labor. Unchain him as necessary.
More likely Walker would get rid of it.
Incidentally, Scott Walker has been talking about all the issues.
It takes real guts to take on Mr Big of any type, and unions in particular, have a reputation for nastiness and violence.
It is now up to Scott to grasp and control the narrative. He needs to be able to communicate, in non apologetic Trump style aggressiveness, why Big Fed Gov Unions are evil and counterproductive. He must define the villain.
HOORAY Scott Walker
Gov. Walker could smartly piggyback this on top of Trump’s criticism of the VA — it is the power of the unions that led to only ONE person being fired over the entire VA scandal.
In the private sector, dozens of people would have lost their jobs, had such a thing occurred in a local hospital system.
