Will Pope Francis' rhetoric slow conservatives' conversion to Catholicism?
WilliamIII | Sept 27 2015 | WilliamIII

Since the heydey of Pope John Paul II's pontificate, there has been a significant phenomenon in the US of politically and/or culturally conservative people converting to Catholicism.

With the current pope's politically liberal rhetoric, will we see fewer of these conversions?

Also, it's interesting that talking about global warming has proved to be a pretty effective way to get the media to stop focusing on pedophile-coverup scandals. You don't suppose that's part of the strategy, do you?

Where’s the “hate” in a question about the implications of the pope’s public remarks?

He is the Barack Obama of the Vatican.

Patriotism is supporting your country all the time, and your government when it deserves it.

Catholicism is supporting your Catholic religion all the time and the Vatican when it deserves it.

You’re talking as if the Vatican isn’t at the center of what Catholicism is about. Henry VIII said he could be a Catholic without the pope; was he right?

Thank you. I was wondering the same thing.

Good comment: “Catholicism is supporting your Catholic religion all the time and the Vatican when it deserves it.”

Although perhaps replace “Vatican” with “a specific Pope.” There have been many popes that were/are viewed as “bad” but the Catholic Church and Christianity has survived them.

And as a Protestant, I expect Catholicism to continue after Pope Francis and perhaps to find a new pope as good as Pope Benedict XVI.

I had to endure the same cleansing (personally) as a (former) member of the ELCA. If you can handle the leadership of the Pope, stick with it, and pray for change in the next Pope; otherwise, it is a difficult position to defend, no doubt.

Not nearly as much as Pope Francis' rhetoric will speed Catholics' conversions to Protestantism and paganism.

The Popemobile he wanted to use but it wouldn't get him around town to all his Marxist lectures without a charge.

Please name a parish in the US who is more conservative than the Pope is; I’d love to know if there is one left somewhere, I’ve yet to find one.

How many Catholics today reject this pope?

All of this nonsense makes me wonder not why I’m a Catholic but why I’m a member of Free Republic? What is the point? It is only for born-agains. I’m tired of the hate. And, yes, I know: I won’t let the door hit me.

No hate. As an ex-Catholic I wish it was the true church, but it's not. That's why I fled it. And there are a lot of ex-Catholics who are "watchmen on the wall" trying to get Catholics to open your eyes and read the Bible and see all the ways that Cathocism is contradictory to God's word. It may be Satan's greatest work of deception ever.

I am drafting a letter to the bishop of my diocese who sent me a brochure from the Stewardship and Development Office of the diocese telling him that I am greatly disappointed in the Pope in his address to Congress not mentioning the Lord Jesus Christ, not mentioning the evil of abortion or the good of adoption, not stating that marriage is a sacrament between one man and one woman, etc.

I told him good stewardship requires a steward to withhold time, treasure, and talent from those efforts which are detrimental to the saving of souls.

I have only heard one sermon on the evil of abortion and one on the fact that what is called gay marriage is neither gay nor marriage and is a mental disorder in the three years I have been in this diocese. The same priest who gave both sermons is a retired priest in his eighties.

I hear a lot of pap about saving the environment and other pagan concepts.

When I was growing up, there was a rhetorical question: Is the Pope Catholic!?

This Pope seems to have answered that question in the negative.

Is he Pope Francis or Pope Frances? (Insert gender neutral pronoun) looked to have an awfully large behind in that white dress (insert general neutral pronoun) was wearing the other day.

I am a cradle Catholic and I find myself referring to this person as the Pagan Princess because (insert gender neutral pronoun) seems to be more into worshiping Gaia than the Triume God.

Neither the RC or Protestants have a lock on God. Claiming either of those at heavens gate will not get one very far.

There is a remnant in both camps, but only a remnant, this has happened before in the Bible, in fact God even saved a few gentiles in the OT............

This pope’s left-wing enthusiasm for doing his so-called good with other people’s money would certainly stop me dead in my tracks if I had any inclination to convert to Catholicism.

“It is only for born-agains”

Now now. Nobody with half a brain hates anyone for their religion.

I hate this pope, not because he’s Catholic, and not just because he’s a commie - but because he is preaching lies and misery to you and your fellow Catholics - and doing what may be irreparable harm to your religion.

The Catholic Church will not recover easily from this guy, this Argentinian pretending to be a man, and your next pope will not be able to fix the damage, nor the next one after him.

Stay here at FR, be tolerant of other religions, and insist that others be tolerant of yours.

The Catholic Church’s mission is to lead people to God and eternal life with Him.

Catholic Church preaches the Truth of Jesus and welcomes both saints and sinners.

Everyone has the opportunity to follow the path to God or not.

We are judged on how we love God and our neighbors.
