Construction on the Bayonne Bridge "Raise the Roadway" project has been set back by two years and won't be completed until mid-2019, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey announced today.
The delay is due to "numerous challenges," the Port Authority said, including: the harsh winter of 2014 to 2015; changes in project staging to address community concerns and reduce construction impacts overnight; modifications to the existing steel arch to ensure safety and allow traffic to continue during construction; as well as steel reinforcement activities requiring additional repairs.
The $1.3 billion "Raise the Roadway" project, which began in May 2013, is designed to raise the navigational clearance under the crossing to 215 feet to allow larger, modern ships to travel under it.

Meaning it will be double the original cost.
Thanks for posting this - I used to run on the pedestrian walkway along that bridge into Staten Island ... I guess they need to augment the road for traffic from 440 ...
Like a Boston “Big Dig” project?
I walked over the Bayonne bridge two days after 9/11 to get to my job at Rockefeller plaza.
it took four hours. But i was a Bull back then.
now i’m just full of bull :)
There ya go. Get the government and the unions together, and there’s no end to how much taxpayer money gets pissed away.
I'm a civil engineer by trade, and I'm not surprised at the delay. That's a very unique project that had a pretty steep learning curve. There's a fascinating animated video of the process posted on YouTube:
Hell, my mother walked from where the Trump Tower is now in Midtown Manhattan all the way out to Jackson Heights, Queens (via the Queensboro Bridge) at night during the Great Northeast Blackout of 1965... in high heels.
Well, mine were stilettos!! I borrowed them from my girlfriend :)
Mother sounds pretty darn tough.
I was still 3 years away during that blackout. i have to read about it.
Thank you for posting that animated video - that’s a major work of engineering to raise the bridge 15 feet while keeping it open. I remember several times running over the bridge while a ship was passing underneath; there was NOT a lot of clearance!
You’re welcome. I think they’re actually raising it 50 feet — to 215 feet. It’s about 65 feet over the water right now.
Great project video you shared - thx.
Wondering how much bigger these cargo ships need to be?
Look at the size and scale of what’s already passing beneath that bridge.
Watch “The giant Arnold Maersk passing under the Bayonne Bridge
Gotta get the Vig into lots of offshore bank accounts,
Hey, it’s not easy. Give ‘em a break!
Isn’t the Bayonne Bridge the one Tony Soprano drove over in the opening scene?
I watched the video....Amazing! Thanks
15 percent increase in cost seems a little light...
1.3 billion initially cost probably is more like 2.3 billion in the end...
But, hey, it's only money...
Palms need to be greased...
They have the same public sector motto: DON’T KILL THE JOB!
Not , Bayonne Bridge ... this might help http://www.sopranosue.com/openingcredits.htm
