Roseburg grapples with grief and indignation as Obama’s call for US gun control collides with horrifying new details of another mass shooting.
A cache of 13 weapons has been discovered in the possession of gunman who opened fire on a writing class at a community college in rural Oregon on Thursday, killing nine people and injuring seven in the deadliest mass shooting in the state’s history.
Seven weapons were recovered at the gunman’s home, in addition to the six weapons that were recovered on the campus of Umpqua Community College, Celinez Nunez, of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), told reporters during a Friday morning press briefing. A bulletproof jacket and five extra magazines were also recovered at the scene in Roseburg, Oregon, where residents, students, survivors and families were grappling with grief and indignation.
All 13 weapons were purchased legally by the shooter or a family member in the last three years, Nunez said, as a national debate reignited over long languishing gun control reforms. The Douglas County Sheriff’s department said on Twitter that investigators recovered five pistols and one rifle from the crime scene.
Douglas county sheriff John Hanlin said during the press conference that officials were still working to notify victims next-of-kin and said the medical examiner’s office was expected to release their names and brief biographies Friday afternoon.
Hanlin has refused to name the gunman out of deference to the victims and their families, and chastised the media for reporting his name, saying it “glorified” a murderer....

The Bath School disaster was a series of violent attacks perpetrated by Andrew Kehoe on May 18, 1927, in Bath Township, Michigan, that killed 38 elementary school children and six adults and injured at least 58 other people.[Note 1] Kehoe killed his wife and firebombed his farm, then detonated a major explosion in the Bath Consolidated School, before committing suicide by detonating a final explosion in his truck. It is the deadliest mass murder to take place at a school in United States history.[1][2]
Andrew Kehoe, the 55-year-old school board treasurer, was angered by increased taxes and his defeat in the Spring 1926 election for township clerk. He was thought to have planned his “murderous revenge” after that public defeat. He had a reputation for difficulty on the school board and in personal dealings. In addition, in June 1926, he was notified that his mortgage was going to be foreclosed.[3] For much of the next year, a neighbor noticed Kehoe had stopped working on his farm and thought he might be planning suicide. During that period, Kehoe purchased explosives and discreetly planted them on his property and under the school.
Kehoe’s wife was ill with tuberculosis, he had stopped making mortgage payments, and he was under pressure for foreclosure. Some time between May 16 and the morning of May 18, 1927, Kehoe murdered his wife. Then on the morning of May 18 at about 8:45 a.m., he set off various incendiary devices on his homestead that caused the house and other farm buildings to be destroyed by the explosives’ blast and the subsequent fires.
Almost simultaneously, an explosion devastated the north wing of the school building, killing 36 schoolchildren and two teachers. Kehoe had used a timed detonator to ignite hundreds of pounds of dynamite and incendiary pyrotol, which he had secretly planted inside the school over the course of many months. As rescuers began working at the school, Kehoe drove up, stopped, and used a rifle to detonate dynamite inside his shrapnel-filled truck, killing himself, the school superintendent, and several others nearby, as well as injuring more bystanders. During rescue efforts at the school, searchers discovered an additional 500 pounds (230 kg) of unexploded dynamite and pyrotol connected to a timing device set to detonate at the same time as the first explosions; the material was hidden throughout the basement of the south wing. Kehoe had apparently intended to blow up and destroy the entire school.

I mentioned on the original breaking news thread yesterday that I attended college in Klamath Falls, Oregon from 2000-2002 and it seemed that every truck in the parking lot had a rifle or shotgun in the rear window. so there was access to a lot of weapons in the event of a similar situation.
But I can only speculate that if I was in a classroom and heard shots being fired or reports of a active shooter that my first instinct would have been to head to my truck and arm myself. But also I would have stayed at my truck in that position and assisted others to safety near me and remain in cover. By the time I would have gotten to my truck I would have heard the sirens and the last thing that I would want is to be mistaken for the shooter or their accomplish while trying to work my way up to a position where I could get a shot.
Since parking lots on typically on the outer edges of campus I would think that only a person with a CC would have had time to react to prevent further viloence

The 2nd amendment is a Constraint on the Government.
It would make NO SENSE AT ALL for the Government to control it’s own constraints.

There was a TV movie staring Kurt Russell about this. The movie had the traditional anti-gun theme.
At the end there was a voice over stating that Whitman was found to have a brain tumor which may have contributed to his violent act.
HOWEVER, An even LOUDER voice over drowned THAT voice over out telling people to watch another show on the network.
I wouldn’t bet against you, especially on the first bullet point. That seems to be a common factor over the years.
My in-laws own a lot of guns and they are the most law-abiding people but you best not try to break into their home.

There has been research into this: the saturation coverage of this tragedy and the microscopic focus on the perpetrator is motivating others to do the same, so they get the same attention, albeit posthumously.
