Middle East would be more stable if Saddam, Gaddafi still in power: Trump

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. Republican presidential front-runner Donald Trump said on Sunday the Middle East would be more stable if Muammar Gaddafi and Saddam Hussein were still in power in Libya and Iraq, saying it's "not even a contest".

Trump mentioned the countries in comparison to current efforts to drive Syrian President Bashar al-Assad out of power.

"You can make the case, if you look at Libya, look at what we did there, it's a mess," Trump said on NBC.

"If you look at Saddam Hussein with Iraq, look what we did there, it's a mess. It's going to be the same thing" in Syria, he said.

Asked by NBC's Chuck Todd if the Middle East would be more stable with Gaddafi and Saddam in power, Trump replied, "Of course it would be."

Sorry, I could not get past the first 3 minutes of the twenty minutes.

I like Charles Payne. He grew up in Harlem and dreamt of becoming a businessman. He interviewed Trump last week and it was telecasted last Friday. I recommend all three links.

Tax Plan (you will like Charles’ questions):

It's still great to be an American in America; may God bless us all.

Back at ya!

The audio on my computer doesn't work, so the youtube link doesn't do me much good.

I see it says "Why Gaddafi was killed." Whatever the reason, it sure turned out bad. A lesson to learn there, but the big fool Obama says "Push on!" and take out Assad. Won't happen now with Putin there.

"He couldn't do it. After 09/11, he was a natural."

After 9/11 we had to go to war with somebody.

I'm not being facetious or sarcastic.

It was imperative for the nation.

But, it should have been Iran.

Trump seems to get a lot of pleasure out of badmouthing George W. Bush.

Saddam was trying to acquire nukes. Whether or not he would have succeeded by now is something we will never know. So ultimately we can never know for certain whether the decision to take Saddam out was the right one. But the current mess owes more to Jimmy Carter and Barack Obama than to GWB.

Here is a look at post-Gadaffi Libya. It's a western liberal propaganda piece that supports the terrorists but it still gives a picture of what's going on there. The comments, some by Libyans, take it to task for the propaganda that it is.

Yeah, well, maybe, but the fact is that as it stands now, Trump is right and the rest is history.

None of those were reasons that justified a US invasion

Especially considering he was a counterbalance to Iran

We did Iran a great favor by getting rid of their biggest enemy

I agree and said so at the time. We should never take out a dictator in a country that only operates well under a dictator until we KNOW we’ve got a better dictator to replace him.

Everyone of the Middle East countries that became part of the “coalition of the willing” screwed up. But, those with the most money owned the Bushes so the other countries were forced to at least say they were in.

They all should have stood up and helped Ghaddafi. If they had obama would have backed down.

I agree. And they should have made it a spectacle of it at POS Obama’s precious UN. You’re right, he would have backed down.

Trump is 100% right Saddam was better than the shit storm we have now. Iraq was such a waste of capital and US lives. A very dumb strategic move, that I sadly supported at the time in part due to the patriotism surge because 9/11. Hindsight is 20/20 and these muslims need a dictator to murder them and keep them in line. Planet democracy does not work.

I agree concerning Gadaffi, but not Sadaam.

Gadaffi was trying to bring Libya into the modern era, and he was doing hydro-logical work to green the Libyan desert that was becoming one of the Wonders of the World.Obama used Libya to ruin NATO.

Saddam was just a pure despot who was propped up by the Saudis to buffer Iran. He was horrid. And its good that he was ousted but the problem is that Obama would not finish the job properly. After WWII the West occupied Germany and Italy to make sure they got off on the right foot. Obama purposefully prevented that rebuilding in Iraq and should be punished for it.

I agree with Trump on this. If you’re set on “regime change”, you should have some plausible alternative (based on reality, not wishful thinking) to the dictators you overthrow. The reality of overthrowing strongmen in the Middle East and elsewhere in the Third World is usually a failed state plagued by sectarian and/or tribal wars, not the rosy picture of “democracy and freedom” that we heard from liberal and neoconservative supporters of regime change.
