For Muslim-Americans, Baby Aidan or Baby Muhammad?
NY Times ^ | OCT. 3, 2015 | WAJAHAT ALI

Posted on 10/04/2015 12:57:46 PM PDT by TroutStalker

“ALHAMDULILAH, by the greatest blessings of God, we are overjoyed to announce the birth of our beloved new baby son, Aidan.”

I sincerely celebrated the good news, deferred to social media etiquette and clicked “like” on my friend’s post. Another new Muslim baby Aidan had entered the world.

He joins lots of little Aidans, Rayans and Adams, Sarahs, Laylas and Sophias smiling and drooling their way through my Facebook feed. Not popping up as much? Bouncing baby Muhammads.

The logic goes that “Rayan” can blend in as a moderate “Ryan,” “Aidan” is cool, mysterious and thus inherently likable; and “Adam,” inspired by the prophet, is sturdy, safe and reliable like George, William and Oprah. And who doesn’t like a plain and tall “Sarah,” an exotic “Layla,” who even got Eric Clapton on his knees?

The process of choosing a name for a tiny human being is a tremendous, anxiety-inducing responsibility that can lead to marital spats, desperate crowdsourcing and late-night prayers for divine inspiration.

For Muslim parents, it carries a much heavier burden.

“Should we give our baby a less Muslim-y name?” I asked my wife after we did an awkward, late-night celebration dance upon seeing the “+” sign appear on the pregnancy test over a year and a half ago.

It wasn’t crazy to be entertaining the question. Why burden your kid with a profile-worthy name in addition to the problems he will likely inherit because of his skin color, ethnicity and religion?

The writer clearly considers America to be a hate-filled, bigoted country.

Why does he want to live here?

And why do we want him to live here?

My parents chose an ethnic name for me. One that goes back to Sanskrit. Yeah, it got me beaten-up once or twice . . . but then I got wise. It was the South Side of Chicago after all. No one messed with me again . . . .

Exactly. Why do they want to live here? Simple - to take over.

They are incapable of saying anything without referring to the horrible burdens we evil White Christians place on those poor, oppressed victims.

Most the comments are well thought out and very realistic.
I like the one who described a boy she knew in High School
who said “My parents named me Jihad, but you can call me Jay.”

Every single mozlum is a filthy dirty pedophiile-worshipping misogynist. Piss be upon them. Go infect another country.

How about if I change my name to Jabbar or Khameel? Then I can build clock bombs and get invited to talk shows.

It surprised me:

“Around 2004 I was volunteering in an after-school program, to bolster research skills the kids had the task of finding out what the meaning of their first names. At the end of the task the kids took turns telling us what the discovered. A beautiful 7 year old boy with a big smile and gorgeous eyes proudly informed us of the meaning of his name, Jihad. I have to say I think that’s a bigger burden than a boy named Sue.”

We should hang our heads in shame for worrying about being blown up or decapitated by a muslim. No matter how many times they scream ‘convert or die’, or how many polls indicate they’d love to bring our government down and enslave us in their garbage theocracy.

When I moved to the West coast, I became friends with the son of Japanese immigrants. His name is Ken. Brothers are Michael, Steve, and Bill, sister’s name is Jean. All of his friends that are of Japanese ancestry have the first name of Christian saints, none have Japanese first names. Even the parents go by Western monikers, i.e. Fusao is “Tony”, Masao is “Mike”, and Takashi is “Ted”.

Never read any hand wringing, agonized article, about what kind of names they should give their children.
