Sen. Ted Cruz said Thursday that he doesn’t think that Donald Trump will capture the 2016 GOP presidential nomination and predicted that it is only a matter of time before most of the New York billionaire’s supporters will move into his camp. During an appearance on WABC-AM Radio, host Rita Cosby asked Mr. Cruz whether he would eventually move past Mr. Trump based on his conservative principles, and the Texas Republcian said “I think that’s right.” “In time, I don’t believe Donald is going to be the nominee, and I think in time the lion’s share of his supporters end up with us,” Mr. Cruz said. Mr. Trump has tangled with most of the candidates running for the Republican presidential nomination and has touted how some of his rivals have sunk in the polls after attacking him. But he has not traded barbs with Mr. Cruz, who has been Mr. Trump’s biggest ally in the crowded GOP field. In the WABC-AM interview, Mr. Cruz continued to praise Mr. Trump, saying he liked and respected “Donald.” Mr. Cruz said Mr. Trump has boosted his candidacy and his chance of becoming the party’s standard-bearer. “I think his involvement has been tremendously helpful to my campaign because it has framed the central question of the primary as: Who will stand up to Washington?” Mr. Cruz said. “And if that’s the central question, the natural next question, that any voter will ask is okay, well who actually has stood up to Washington? Who has a record in that regard?” The Cruz campaign also announced Thursday that he will report raising $12.2 million over the last three months — exceeding the hauls of fellow Sens. Marco Rubio of Florida, who plans to report $6 million, and Rand Paul of Kentucky, who raised $2.5 million.

Cruz is doing OK, but your point about Dem voters is spot on. Cruz will get some of Trump's troops, but even if he got them all, he won't stand a chance in the general.
Maybe God has His eye on someone other than Cruz? Just because he puts his faith out there - and I’m not saying he shouln’t - doesn’t mean he is God’s choice.

Disagree. It’s been said here on FR many times in the past few days: If Trump gets out, for ANY reason, the campaign is over, the hopes and the interest of the regular folks flop to the ground like a deflated baloon, and we get another Rat POTUS.
IF trump goes, the Rats and the MSM are free to hammer Cruz, et al, with all the opposition research they’ve dug up, and the Rats and the GOPe go on hand-in-hand, and complete the job of destroying the United States of America.
I pray our Heavenly Father to protect, promote and give wisdom to Donald John Trump.
At this point, my heart tells me that TRUMP/CRUZ is now out the window. It will have to be TRUMP/SESSIONS or someone else. Cruz just crapped in his own nest. IMHO.
I'm in the same place, although Trump is not the only one I wouldn't vote for. There are others, but Trump's the only one "conservative" people are going ape over.
I've seen (and been on the receiving end of) some very ugly things, even very vile and profane things posted by FReepers who dislike whoever takes issue with Trump. This adoration parallels what we saw in 2008 when BO was the candidate. There's a messiah-type reverence for Trump that I could never have imagined "conservatives" engaging in. It's frightening.
I'm encouraged by the conservatives I know in real life. None of my conservative friends or family members are the least bit enamored with Trump. I'm not sure if they'll skip voting as you and I will, but, knowing their commitment to conservatism, I would be surprised if they felt desperate enough to vote for him. We've all been through the desperation of voting for someone whose not a true conservative enough times that I'd feel safe making a friendly wager that they wouldn't participate were Trump the nominee.
P.S. Remember how good Trump's judgment was in '08? He was all in for Romney, wasn't he? And now he's slamming Romney left and right. It wasn't that Trump's judgment was lacking. That could NEVER be the case! It was that Mitt let us down.
Gosh, I just read on here earlier today that Trump has an excellent ground game going - guess you missed that??? Trump needs the attention? He could sit back and retire right now and leave this mess to someone else if he chose to do so. Some of you are delusional. I think it is the other candidates who want the fame and attention.

“Well you know Rita - I’ve been low in the polls since this started - so it was pretty much set in stone that I wouldn’t get the nomination. My wife told me to get out even before the first debate - she thought it was pointless. But then I showed her the results of all the fundraising efforts - and all that money coming in. I’m not sure why all those people voting with their wallets don’t vote for me in the polls. But hey - if I just dropped out now - think of all that money I won’t get. And maybe, just maybe, I can get a desk job somewhere under President Trump”

And I continually lift Trump in prayer.
The image of scrapper is something that Trump more easily projects between the two candidates.
Now maybe Cruz could take the figurative Joe Weider course and come back out with a take no prisoners attitude and flatten Trump, taking large chunks of votes as spoils, in areas where Trump has been more tentative and the body politic cares.
Maybe. But the time to take Joe Weider courses probably isn’t this late.
It just looks like Trump is the one who suggests more credibly to greater America that he will, in fact, turn Washington DC on its ear, and in a richly deserved way. Doesn’t matter what we predict here in our little box if greater America fails to agree.
It certainly sounds dismissive.

Cruz is my first choice, but I would be an enthusiastic supporter of Trump if he wins the nomination.
I think it was unfortunate for Cruz to say this, but I don’t see it as an insult to Trump. It’s an observation, not a put down. He’s free to muse about Trump dropping out and him (Cruz) getting Trumps voters.
Trump is nowhere near as thin skinned as folks think. I don’t think Trump will see this as an attack. I think he’ll make remarks about it and disagree, but that’s about it.
IMO Cruz and Trump are the team. I would urge Cruz to nurture that team. It’s vitally important IMO.
There is no other light to see Cruz’s comments in - Out of the abundance of the heart - the mouth speaketh.
