Putin’s air campaign in Syria is not only supporting Assad, it’s giving cover to fighters from the so-called Islamic State.
Last June, the U.S. embassy in Damascus accused Bashar al-Assad’s air force of clearing a path for an ISIS advance on Syrian rebels in the Aleppo town of Azaz. “Reports indicate that the regime is making air strikes in support of [ISIS’s] advance on Aleppo, aiding extremists against Syrian population,” the embassy account tweeted, following up with a broader accusation: “We have long seen that the regime avoids [ISIS] lines, in complete contradiction to the regime’s claims to be fighting [ISIS].”
Now Russia seems to have inherited Assad’s role as the unacknowledged air force of ISIS.

The Daily Beast is full of it. Russia is allied with Syria and Iran. Iran is allied with the Iraqis government all are Shiite. ISIS is Sunni. Shiite and Sunni are mortal enemies. Russia would not be backing the mortal enemy of it’s Syrian/Iranian allies. If anyone is backing ISIS it’s the neocon wing of the GOPe with insane desire for a no fly zone in Syria.
While there is some truth in your comment you have drawn the wrong (Russia is helping ISIS) conclusion. The West wants to provide air cover to the nonexistent moderate rebels in Syria. The ones the CIA trained, Russias goal is to remove the excuse for a USA imposed no fly zone. Once that is done destroying ISIS will be a top priority for Russia.

There is also the matter of who has been provided with the weapons capable of harming the T-14 Armata. That is who the Russians are removing from the field first. It’s obvious.

I would think, by now, as people have had the opportunity to LISTEN to Putin - they heard him, repeatedly, include going after and destroying Chechnya jihadists to keep them from returning to Russia.
He has had some terrible battles with them over the past years and is determined to keep them from returning to Russia and wreaking more murder and mayhem.
I doubt there is a world leader, other than Putin, who hates these terrorists more. He is going to keep these and the other jihadists form invading Russia by the 100’s of thousands, as they are now all over Europe - and scheduled for the USA. He realized that SOMEone had to act before it was too late - if it isn’t already.

Without proof it is hard to believe the Russians are providing close air support for IS benefit. It is in Putin’s interest to bomb all insurgents whether they are US backed al Queda or IS. They do mean to restore order for the Assad regime. Why do you think the al Queda insurgents should be spared?
