WASHINGTON — House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy abruptly withdrew his promising bid to become speaker Thursday as the married congressman was accused of having an affair with another married House member in an anonymous posting on Wikipedia.
Minutes before Republicans were to cast votes to make him speaker-elect, McCarthy stood and told his colleagues that a fresh face was needed to unite the party.

Actually, he was accused of conducting an affair with a House member BEFORE withdrawing his bid for speaker.

Rep. Renee Ellmers of North Carolina was one of 10 Republicans who voted with Democrats on Wednesday against legislation that would roll back President Barack Obama’s executive actions on immigration.
She also was one of 26 Republicans who voted against an amendment that would eliminate the 2012 Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, or DACA, which has granted work permits and stopped deportation of 600,000 immigrants who arrived illegally as children.

One thread (GotNews) claims he and Ellmers will resign this morning.
At least he had sense enough to not run for the speakership rather than be another Bob Livingston.

This story didn’t come from the White House. It was apparently an open secret in Washington.
Consider the congresswoman’s North Carolina colleague who warned candidates with character issues to withdraw. He obviously knew about their relationship, and his comments were rightly aimed at McCarthy.
