SALZBURG, Austria In this alpine border town, the suspension of train service into neighboring Germany has been a boon to taxi drivers. Taha, who asked to use only his first name lest local tax collectors hound him about his earnings, makes 300 euros every time he drives a stranded traveler the 143 kilometers (about 90 miles) to Munich.
Since Germany stopped rail service from Austria in mid-September as a way to slow the tide of refugees pouring northward, Taha has made 18 such trips.
Normally in a month I would go to Munich one time, he said last week at the taxi stand outside the station in Salzburg. People dont know what to do without the trains. Some of them will spend anything.
Meanwhile, grocery stores on the German side said their business has been halved as Austrian shoppers have been cut off. The local university lifted restrictions on handicapped parking to accommodate all the professors who commuted by train. For drivers, the frontier is a one-way valve: Getting to work isnt so bad, but coming home can mean a two-hour delay at the road crossing, where Germany has implemented new passport checks.
Salzburgers say its as if a border that had largely melted away has suddenly risen up like one of the stone walls that once surrounded this medieval city. The free flow of people across national lines is a core ideal of the European Unions grand effort at unification. But here, and in other parts of the European Union where cross-border trains have been halted, moving back and forth has taken on an Old Europe feel.

“Im curious to see how Nationalism will manifest out of this.”
Well, we HAVE seen this before.
Someone needs to devise a Final Solution to the Migrant Problem.
Yes, indeed. The Von Trapps on a singing outing over the mountains today end up raped and beheaded in the woods.
It’s a matter of time.
I’m sure a number of people already have.
Storming the Gates of Vienna. Think about is America.
They hated the productive Jews that lived among them .
They sat by and watched their government confiscate their property and send them to camps where they were killed and most of them did nothing to help them.
The ones that survived your brutality and returned to their ancient homeland and turned it productive you now harass about where they grow their produce .
You side with their enemies who try to steal their land , who attack them . Every chance you have to speak up for them you side with their enemies .
Now you have their cursed enemies you have sided with all this time living among you acting towards you just like they act towards them and don’t think it’s so hot .
Will you change your minds and quit voting against Israel ?
Will you quit harassing them about where they grow their produce on their own land ? Will you quit siding with their enemies who are trying to kill them and steal their land ?
I doubt it , Germans might have intelligence but they sorely lack wisdom . You deserve the locust that is just doing what it does naturally , you couldn’t have really been surprised that they act the same way .
The safest place to be is in God’s will . When you go against his will for his people and his land don’t be surprised when you are not blessed and are not safe .
The Hills are alive with the sounds of music uhhh muslim prayers calls.. The ice sheets can’t get there fast enough.
Such a simple statement, and yet so frustratingly few understand.
There will be no sound of music, because music is considered "Haram."
Well said.
Hence post #22.
More like $342. A euro is worth about $1.14.
Oh oh oh, I know! Just make all the refugees into Uber cab drivers. The refugees get work, the Germans get cheaper cab service, they will contribute to the economy, and they can facilitate the immigration of the new refugees. Problem solved. (I don’t need the tag, right?)
This is heartbreaking for anyone (like me) who loves European trains.
Deutschland unter Allah!
Well stated Lera.
Best post of the thread.
Amen!
Well, good. Maybe there should be real borders for once.
Three cheers for national sovereignty!
PING!
