Lindsey Graham Questions the ‘Severed Arm’ of the Massachusetts Flag
nytimes.com ^ | 10/16/15 | Jess Bidgood

In the days after the fatal shooting of nine black churchgoers in Charleston, S.C., in June, Senator Lindsey Graham, the Republican presidential candidate from the state, joined the calls to remove the Confederate battle flag from the State House grounds. Weeks later, it was gone.

And on Thursday, as Mr. Graham was discussing the issue with reporters from The Boston Globe and its spinoff website, Boston.com, he put Massachusetts’s state flag on the hot seat.

“You got an Indian with a – what’s that all about?” Mr. Graham asked, according to Boston.com. “What is that – is the guy holding a severed arm?”

It is actually a free-floating arm holding a sword, floating above a blue shield emblazoned with an Indian.

“I never understood what that was all about,” Mr. Graham said.

Massachusetts’s flag has long raised concerns among Native Americans and some others there. It drew renewed scrutiny amid the Confederate flag debate, including in a Boston Globe column that called it “blindingly archaic,” but efforts to change it have not gained traction.

Minnesota’s state flag, which depicts an Indian with a spear riding a horse past a farmer, was also criticized in the news media this summer.

In June, Gov. Charlie Baker of Massachusetts, a Republican, said, “I would say if there is an interest among the players, and there are many, to have a conversation on the flag, I would certainly be happy to participate in that.”

Seriously, Lindsey, pick up a history book! Read about the period in America between 1763 and 1775, a period known as the Revolution, in which the colony of Massachusetts Bay was in the forefront in the battle to secure our independence from the king and oligarchs like you!

That's not a severed arm, Lindsey, it's an arm holding a sword, for our state motto reads "By this sword we seek peace, but peace only under Liberty!"

The arm with the sword has nothing to do with the Native American Indian, who symbolizes early Massachusetts history (Plymouth) and the collaboration between the Indians and Englishmen. And the Indian's arrow is pointing down, signifying peace.

Peace, the sword, defending Liberty! Get it, Lindsey?? Again, pick up a history book!

Linda Graham is hopelessly at 1% or less,
and has a history of defending ... al Qaeda and ISIS
for his lover Juan McCain, the slaver-enabler
and terrorist-supplier from Arizona.

This is why we hate politicians. They are stupid and ignorant and shoot their mouths off.

Who can forget Rick Perry when he was running for President in ‘12, claiming the American Revolution was in the 16th century?

As much as I hate Linda I have to say, let’s attack other state flags, see how they like. The sanctimonious bastards are all so hot to get rid of the Confederate Flag... let them get rid of their own freaking flags too!

The best way to show how ridiculous a course of action is, is to carry it to its logical conclusion.

These politicos are so bloody ignorant. They should be required to take a civics test before being allowed to run for office.

The collaboration between the Indians and Pilgrims started when an Indian named Samoset walked up to the Pilgrims’ meeting house and knocked on the door. The men inside opened it and Samoset asked in broken English, “Do you have any beer?” The men sat him down and gave him a mug of ale.

Samoset had been working with English sailors off what is now the Maine coast, showing them where to cast their nets. That’s where he learned English and acquired a taste for brew.

Did John McCain tell him to say that? Lindsey should refrain from speaking on his own.

Dude, you so missed Lindsay’s point.....he was just taking a little jab at the overly offended yankees who demanded his state remove the Battle Flag.

I mean, he’s Goober, a RINO loser, but he does make a decent tongue in cheek point here.

but is he right here? Don’t worry, you’re not forced to vote for him if you admit he’s got a point here.....

Cotton, Don’t you know historical FACTS mean nothing in the PC world. Perceptions trump all.
If Graham and others can convince some aggrieved minority that the arm is an affront to them, they then have a “cause”.
In Graham’s case, he is looking for relevancy and traction in the primaries.
Kinda pathetic, but that is what the ruling class do.

Bedford Flag. See statue on Bedford Common. Carried into battle on April 19, 1775.

(clickable for its history)

He's half-right. It makes my native American blood boil to see an Indian on the flag of the liberal cesspool of Massachusetts. (If libs can complain about the Confederate flag, I can have hurty feelers about the Massachusetts flag.)

Why not remove everything and just fly the white flag of surrender?

The Middle East is on fire because of Zero and his enablers in Congress. Linda should be worrying about much more important issues, ya think?

True. Linda is a walking disgrace to the human race. I was just thinking out loud about putting the sanctimonious do-gooders in MA on the hot seat.

Growing up in the twentieth century I, as a child, wondered why it was called that when the years all started with 19. Of course I later understood how it worked but on occasion if someone said the 19th century I would think “ah Cowboys.....18 hundreds”. The eighteenth century was a little more difficult because I first start thinking ‘18 hundreds ? cowboys? No 17 hundreds ...the Revolution!’ It’s almost seamless but there is sometimes a slight delay. It’s odd/even....if the century is odd the years are even and vice versa. Not rocket science admittedly.

Not a Perry fan, not in the least ...and a political orator should get it right.....but I could see the possibility of muffing this.
As I can rarely expound on things political extemporaneously....as it is not my thing...I can understand muffing this for a second or two and having the words fly out and not hearing the mistake till someone later corrects me.

Just saying
