Ben Carson’s Education Department Would Police Universities for Bias
Reason ^

Posted on 10/22/2015 11:17:15 AM PDT by TigerClaws

Unlike some conservatives, Ben Carson doesn’t want to shut down the Education Department—no, he wants to use it to punish universities that demonstrate “extreme” political bias. That’s according to an interview he gave to The Blaze’s Glenn Beck:

I actually have something I would use the department of education to do. It would be to monitor our institutions of higher education for extreme political bias and deny federal funding on that basis.

What does Carson even mean? Would universities risk losing federal funding if professors, or student groups, demonstrated some kind of leftist bias?

He just doesn't get it, it is not an enumerated power given to the Federal Government. Eliminate the Dept of Education and de-fund University subsidies. If the states want to spend their money to fund gender studies or on Austrian Economics it is their choice, not Dr. Carson's.

Not really, in the right context. Public universities have become almost fascist in the way they suppress opposition and provide megaphones and legitimacy for the left wing political agenda. If they are being funded by taxes, then they need to serve all taxpayers and not just their ultra left friends.

Double-edged sword, using a federal agency to police thought.

I like the idea. We need to do the same thing for the broadcast networks. In both cases we should be filing discrimination lawsuits based on the fact that they routinely exclude from hiring people who do not adhere to their party's ideology.

We need to bring the force of government to bear on these people who believe government is the solution to everything. Perhaps they will develop a different point of view after they are on the receiving end?

I have mixed feelings on this. On the one hand the government should not really be in the business of monitoring speech. On the other hand it would be refreshing to see such power used against the radical Left for a change and institutions receiving billions from the taxpayers should not be pushing anti American curriculum filled with hate speech towards those who hold American and Christian values.

That ship sailed long ago. Now it is a weapon, and we are fools if we don't use it now that Liberals have created it.

Eliminate the Dept of Education and de-fund University subsidies.

Also a good idea. I don't see why we can't or shouldn't do both.

I know what he means. The liberals would be put under the same lens that leads the department to search out racism and homophobia. I’ll buy that.

The thought police are already here. All we are talking about is taking over the administration and direction of them, and pointing them at the liberals.

We need some of this to once more give Liberals a distrust of consolidated power. Let them suffer the weapon they themselves created.

Latest in a long list.

Would universities risk losing federal funding if professors, or student groups, demonstrated some kind of leftist bias?

Would they also lose funding if they demonstrated some kind of conservative bias?

Exactly. And the media corporations need to get the same sort of scrutiny.

I argue that the Democratic process cannot function correctly without accurate information, and that when the news distribution system is biased towards one political party, the public cannot receive necessary information it needs to make rational decisions regarding the leadership of this nation.

Liberal monopoly of the information streams interferes with Democracy. It undermines the Democratic process.

It harms the nation, and it harms individuals. The Media should reflect the Demographic makeup of America, not the makeup of the Ultra-Left Urban Democrat Union members who work their currently.

Not being a functional conservative, Carson still seems to think there is some sort of Constitutional reasoning to HAVE a “Department of Education”.

A "conservative" tyranny is still a tyranny. Better to restore the constitution and maximize individual liberty.

Thank you for referencing that article TigerClaws. Please bear in mind that the following critique is directed at Carson and not at you.

"I actually have something I would use the department of education to do. It would be to monitor our institutions of higher education for extreme political bias and deny federal funding on that basis."

FR: Never Accept the Premise of Your Opponent’s Argument

Constitutionally low-information Dr. Carson evidently doesn’t understand the following. The states have never delegated to the feds, expressly via the Constitution the specific power to regulate INTRAstate schools.

In fact, Congress has no constitutional authority to appropriate taxes for the purpose of funding INTRAstate schools.

“Congress is not empowered to tax for those purposes which are within the exclusive province of the States.” —Justice John Marshall, Gibbons v. Ogden, 1824.

Carson's supporters need to get him up to speed on the federal government’s constitutionally limited powers, including Congress’s limited power to appropriate taxes. In fact, if patriots don’t elect a president and Congress that they can work with after the next election to force the corrupt feds to surrender 10th Amendment-protected state powers that they have been stealing from the states for many generatons back to the states, then it’s only a matter of time before somebody as lawless as Obama is in the Oval Office again.
