Trump: I’m Surprised There’s No One “More Conservative” Than Paul Ryan For Speaker (Not Thrilled)
Buzzfeed ^ | Oct. 22, 2015 | Andrew Kaczynski

Posted on 10/23/2015 10:29:40 AM PDT by xzins

“Im not thrilled, I’m not thrilled.”

Donald Trump said Thursday he’s not thrilled with the idea of Wisconsin Rep. Paul Ryan being Speaker of the House and expressed shock that Republicans haven’t found a more conservative candidate.

“Im not thrilled, I’m not thrilled,” Trump said of Ryan on the John Fredericks Show. “Not easily, I mean it’s not that you are given a choice. Don’t forget that you have people in Washington, Republicans that are going to be making a choice, and it looks like he is going to be the one. You saw what happens this morning and it looks like he is going to be the one. And if you have to live with it, you have to live with it, John. We can’t go crazy. We can’t say oh gee, I refuse to show up, or I refuse to do something.”

Trump said Ryan was soft on immigration, the key issue of Trump’s campaign.

“Now he’s very, very weak on illegal immigration, I don’t like that, you know he’s an amnesty person, and you know I’m not thrilled with that,” said Trump. “Because you get amnesty and you do something wrong, you get amnesty, that’s not what we are all about. And other things that you mentioned. And at the same time, a very conservative group in Washington, that you like and that I like and you know it looks like they are backing him. You want to sort of have a group of people that are unified and they do need somebody. “I’m a little surprised that somebody more conservative and tough, because they need some toughness, and smartness, and I’m a little surprised that somebody more conservative and tougher on the issues has not been chosen,” said Trump. “I’m a little surprised, actually.” Trump’s views on Ryan have shifted between support and criticism in recent years.

Trump told Fox And Friends in 2011, “Well, I think Boehner is doing a good job, but he’s trying to get the best number he can and it looks like he’s got the votes, but the really big one is going to be what Paul Ryan, who I think is also a terrific guy, just absolutely terrific, what he’s trying to do, that’s the long-term picture.”

On Twitter earlier this week, Trump praised Ryan, saying, “Paul Ryan is far from my first choice, but a very nice guy. The Republicans should go for tough and (very) smart this time - no games!”

Still, Trump has been critical of the Wisconsin congressman in past, saying his budget would doom Republican electoral prospects.

So...President Trump would do exactly what to the speaker of the house? Fire him? Suppose for the sake of argument that Trump could stir up enough chaos, discontent and animosity that Ryan got booted out as speaker. Who could this disorganized dumpster-fire of a house agree on to replace him?

On 10 October Breitbart reports that Trump says Ryan is far from his first choice.

Before the 2012 election Boehner was still an unknown. Your quote is from 2011. He didn’t become speaker until Jan of 2011.

In the general election, Trump needs to make Congress a central issue of his campaign. These points should be hit home:

1) It’s gonna be a lot easier to accomplish what needs to be done if we have a Republican Congress.

2) BUT, Republican leadership in Congress MUST change. Trump needs to reach out to conservative congressmen. He should also publicly endorse a House Speaker, and Senate majority candidate

As President, he should insist that Congress pass a Congressional term limits amendment to be sent to the states. Bargain with them. i.e., If you want X, Y or Z, you MUST pass a term limits amendment first.

Well I think Trump kind of did that today.

I hate to say I agree with the theory that a lot of the so called conservatives still want a lot of immigration especially the H1-B visas.

“Im not thrilled, I’m not thrilled.”

And I have no doubt when President Trump goes to Congress with his agenda then Speaker Ryan will say, “I'm not thrilled, I’m not thrilled.”

Yes, I’ve read that. But being far from his first choice is not opposition to him, it just means he likes other people more. Probably everyone here has a personal favorite.

The troubling part of Trump’s opposition to Ryan is that he doesn’t like that Ryan wants to reign in entitlements. Trump criticized the Ryan budget specifically because it tries to do something about entitlements that we will never be able to afford going forward.

My point was simply about the timing. He spoke against Ryan a few weeks ago.

I don't think he is/was necessarily lying. That is too jaded and cynical. He may have just been ignorant about Ryan and which way to pander that would give him the best advantage. Maybe he has evolved or just got his political compass back from the shop.

If Ryan becomes speaker he should be primaried, just like Eric Cantor.

Geez Trump keeps saying the right stuff (for conservatives).
Ryan can go speak at McDonald’s. Let’s not forget his performance against Biden in their debate.
