Carson edges Trump in national poll

Ben Carson has edged out fellow GOP presidential candidate Donald Trump in a new national poll, taking the top spot from the real estate mogul for the first time in months.

Carson is supported by 26 percent of GOP primary voters, followed by Trump at 22 percent, according to the CBS News/New York Times poll released early Tuesday. All other candidates follow in the single digits, with Sen. Marco Rubio (Fla.) at 8 percent and businesswoman Carly Fiorina and former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush at 7 percent each.

The poll represents growing momentum for Carson, who surpassed Trump in several polls in the early voting state of Iowa over the past week ahead of the next GOP debate on Wednesday.

"Ben Carson is now doing well," Trump acknowledged on MSNBC's "Morning Joe" after the poll came out, adding that he believed Carson would see more scrutiny as a front-runner.

This too shall pass. We went through this in 2008 and 2012 with several different candidates leading the polls at various times.

Well, except the Trump followers never thought it could happen to their guy. They were so sure Trump had it locked up, hence the apoplectic responses from the Trumpsters. It's amusing how they claim this national poll and the multitude of other Iowa polls showing Carson taking the lead are all bogus, yet when the poll shows Trump leading these same people accept it as truth.

As long as Trump keeps his lead in NH and SC everything is fine.

Iowa can be written off. The winner in NH and SC historically takes the lead in the national polls going forward.

The sample is 512 for Republicans. The rest are Democrats but the result for the Democratic race has not been released.
Democrats were not interviewed for the Republican primary questions, as you imply. “

Carson is ahead. Let’s get over it.

An oversample of registered voters who are Republican was interviewed for a total of 512 interviews with Republican registered voters. The results were then weighted in proportion to the adult population. The margin of error for the Republican registered voters is 7 percentage points.”

The polls mean very little either way. Whoever wins, they will need to win over the other guy’s supporters. Mock with caution.

Like I said.

The right has a real “sentimentality over substance” problem where we don’t have the ability to ever win a political war.

Slowly is not a $&#*% option in a general election. Being pedantic is not a strategy when your opponents operate fast and from multiple directions.

You think the general electorate is going to sit around and wait for Carson to make some “brilliant” point, then you seriously have no clue as to how 2016 is going to play out.

Carson will be a sitting duck.

“Looks like the bloom may be off the rose.”

Sounds like two candidates with essentially equal chances of winning the nomination, based on current data. These are within the margin of error most likely. The real story is that the rest of the field is so far behind. Together, these two are responsible for around half of the potential primary votes. IMHO this says a lot about how distrusted career politicians are at this point in time.

Crowd sizes don’t lie. Pollsters can....and, easily do.

National Review had an article some time ago where it quoted Carson saying that he has the same goals as Al Sharpton, only a different path to achieving those goals. National Review is NOT Free Republic by a long shot.

Does Carson’s superior intellect and amazing use of language require him to support amnesty? Or questionable, contradictory comments on gun control? Or question Trump’s Christianity?

Google “ben carson drawing thousands” and you’ll see plenty of entries. He’s not bringing in as large crowds as Trump, but is doing well in his own right.

[It is unwise to overlook the fact that Dr Ben has the finest intellect and control of the language of any candidate in modern memory}

Unfortunately BEN CARSON doesn’t seem to have sense to hire top advisers who love America. I don’t consider Farrakhana a true American. CARSON’S positive reports of Black Lives matter is worrisome.

Unfortunately, I think Cruz would get crushed in a Goldwater-like rout. He says the right things---and many things Trump says---but in a way that they sound hostile, alien. For all his brashness, Trump's tone seems to connect. But we'll see.

I think we may be seeing a necessary campaign shift on Trump's part from "front runner" to serious, strategic campaigner. He may be thinking he can concede IA and win the next dozen states---I don't know, just guessing---but inside the Trump tent I bet they don't care about IA and are "demonstrating" there (to use a military term) to keep Carson occupied while he seals NH, NV, SC, GA, FL, TX, and the other early states. Like Huckabee and Santorum and Bush 41, Cason can celebrate IA while losing everywhere else.

Welcome to FR, Komodoto. Thank you for showing up, TODAY....to chime in on how “Carson is ahead. Let’s get over it.”

Your concern for FReeper’s ability to “get over” things, has been noted.

Who’s your candidate for 2016?

Polls continue to show that 78 percent do not want Trump.

I believe the American people would love a President with a strong moral character who is respectful, thoughtful, decisive and a little bit humble.

Just sayin’

The polls mean very little either way.

Correct, at this stage the polls don't mean too much for the candidates that can afford to stay in the race for the long haul.

This is why all the Trump followers and "the Donald" himself should have avoided yammering on about polls nonstop.

At least with Trump he was in/on the news all the time, releasing policy papers, doing interviews, had name recognition etc...you could understand where his numbers came from.

What news about Carson is there except for his poll standings? Nothing. This poll bounce is based on....nothing.

The biggest crowd I’ve seen for Carson, was at one of his recent book signings. It was in a bookstore.

Trump - Carson or Carson - Trump which ever you pick looks like what the primary maybe
coming down to. When none of the others can break into double digits they will be folding
shop shortly. Cruz may have a some cash to go a little longer than most of them.

Morning Joe talked about it, too. They’re (MSM) going to take whatever possible chink in Trump’s armor they think they see....and, magnify it by 1,000.
