Hooray! At the CNBC debate as the moderators’ attacks increased, the candidates’ spontaneous unification on stage was visible and encouraging. Before the show, I’ll bet they had no idea the night would be a turning point for them. (A blessing in disguise.) Now, without the RNC influence we might get somewhere.

“does anyone here doubt that Trump arranged this “deal?” “

You could almost see the wheels turning in his head as the debate progressed. People wondered why he was more subdued than in past debates. I think he was preoccupied — forming a plan as he stood there.

Well let's resurrect his catchy campaign theme song.

If the nomination process has devolved to the candidates and fundraising has devolved to PACs, what role does the RNC have? I guess they still hold the Republican Convention, but what’s to stop the candidates from taking that over, too, and run it over Facebook, per Ben Carson’s suggestion?

The RNC is a confederation of the state and territorial Republican Parties. Its irreducible core function is to establish the rules by which the state parties can come together to field a national candidate. The rules are adopted at the national convention, which is the plenary body of the party, assembled (per the current rules) once every four years, or by special call.

Beyond that, the RNC does whatever the state parties direct it to do. Every state party has a national committeeman, national committeewoman, and a state chairman, elected under state party rules. These delegates ARE the RNC. Everybody else is just staff. Historically the RNC's biggest role was to raise the funds for the presidential campaign. That is what turned the RNC into the money machine that reaches out and touches all of us regularly (whether we respond or not).

People should stop turning the RNC into some kind of hobgoblin. It is the confederation of the state parties. No more, and no less. Pretty simple when you get down to it.

The Republicans still operate under traditional rules of engagement. The Democrats poisoned their process in 1968 when the Democratic Convention kowtowed to Jesse Jackson and refused to seat the Illinois delegation, due to the melanin balance of its delegates. It seated instead Jesse's rump faction, so in essence the national party suppressed one of its state constituent parties and asserted national control over delegate selection. This was a big stop down the slippery slope to a Leninist party enforcing discipline from above. The Republicans should not follow this model.

“In response to the revelation that the RNC will be cut out of the process, RNC chief spokesman Sean Spicer—the party’s point man on handling debates until now—said the RNC stands ready to help the candidates in any way they can.” Then he quickly shoved his tail up his ash and waddled away.

I must say, Ben Carson has a VERY competent campaign manager. They’re doing things we’ve all been complaining about for years. And they’re getting results.

You forgot to put in the disclaimer at the bottom, “...not endorsed by any candidate or candidate’s campaign”. So that PAC is illegal. :)

Thanks. I was 8 when Reagan was elected.

Your analysis sounds right and I hope this is Cruz’s plan.

When I said the end of the RNC I meant the end of them the way they have been that is DNC light or as my family hears me say the DNC in low gear.

Spicer just wants to be sure they will show up at the convention. Take this nomination and shove it.

‘Yet another change of position of Trump, who before has argued for fewer candidates on stage - even during the second debate itself declared Rand Paul didn’t belong there because he was “number 11”.’

Guess your Trump hate got the better of you.

‘Ben Carson’s representative proposed putting all 14 candidates in one debate, but Trump wants to see fewer people take the stage.’

Senator Cruz, please briefly explain your tax plan and give me ONE reason why you think yours is superior to others on this stage.

Mr. Trump, same question.

Seems to me there’s a “rule” amongst the liberal moderators that you’re never supposed to bring up Obama’s name, or ask the candidates to compare/contrast their ideas with those of Obama.

Oh I agree...it’s just that the two-party pantomime has gone on for so long that far too many people are still convinced there’s a difference.

Persons with that mindset should be forced to drive a loop of the DC Beltway, away from the pretty museums and monuments, where they can behold the New Rome complete with gilded palaces and fountains.

The GOPe and the Dems are like staff of the Venetian and Bellagio, respectively, in Las Vegas. They claim they’re in competition but the real objective is to keep the dollars flowing to the city.

I’m not a conspiracy type but cronyism and string-pulling are beyond obvious especially on the GOPe side. They moan about gridlock but gridlock is exactly what is prolonging and strengthening the hold of their paymasters. They’ve managed to go without a proper budget for twice as long as the US was involved in WWII. Cowardice is their watchword.
