Donald Trump has rejected the Republican campaignsâ joint effort to negotiate the terms of the GOP debate format with the major media networks, insisting he will negotiate independently.
It is a brazenâand brilliantâmove, one that demonstrates the difference between politics-as-usual and the bold reform Trump is promising his supporters.
(One does not have to be a Trump supporterâindeed, this author has at times been a criticâto recognize that.)
ABC News released a draft list of the other campaignsâ demands. It is rather underwhelmingâa demand for petty guarantees, such as a promise that moderators will not ask the candidates to raise their hands in answer to questions. It is a list, sadly, that validates Democratsâ mockery, which had painted the Republican candidates as âwhiners.â
Trump is not just demanding changes in camera angles. He is proposing that debates no longer be the intellectual property of the mainstream mediaâthat they become âopen sourceâ content, run by political parties for the benefit of the public, and not by the mainstream media, with any proceeds of advertising donated to charitable causes.
So while the other campaigns are haggling over marginalia, Trump is bidding on an entirely different deal. He has the leverage to pull it off, because he brings the ratings to the show. But the real genius of the idea is the way he proposes to re-frame primary debates, not just improve them.
It is a pitch aimed beyond politicians, at the public.

Yes, Trump doesn’t think small.
Petty Dictator is going to be thrown at Trump by more than one Freeper whose ox has been gored.
Brazen and brilliant?
Works for me!
Yep!
Who would you rather have negotiating with the networks, Priebus, or Trump?
LOL.
Mark Levin was suggesting this last week.
Trump must listen to Levin.
That is great news.
Donald being Donald... Brilliant!
I keep noticing that Breitbart and other Conservative websites have big advertisements for the Christian book, “The Four Major Cults”, of which Seventh Day Adventism is one. Looks like an effort to get the word out to the thousands of evangelicals being deceived by Carson.
Doesn’t he lose the leverage of “ratings” once he says all the proceeds have to go to charity? His demands will never be accepted.
Trump is no “follower” . Trump is a leader with 11 billion dollars. These guy are not a fly on his butt. GO TRUMP!~!
No.
No profits, means less debates, means a lower amount of information.
This man will turn DC - the most corrupt city in the world - upside down if elected . Go Trump !
Does anyone know where this list came from? Chris Christie said he knew nothing about it before it was released. Anything from the MSM is suspect.
Someone who has access should check and see if Dr Ben checked the CO box when registering for the draft.
Who would you rather have negotiating with the networks, Priebus, or Herman Munster ?
HM
Geez, can you imagine someone sitting at the Kennedy desk in the Oval Office who is a tough, no nonsense negotiator and a fighter? Sure beats socialist communists and/or community organizers or any combination of those.
Chrissie Cream has already gone on record as saying the RNC should continue to negotiate debates - the rat .
Good idea. Wish I had access. The SDA’s served in the military in non combatant roles, so he might not have checked that box. His Pacifism still eliminates him as an effective Commander in Chief.
I haven’t read The Art of the Deal, and I’m sure I’d make a wretched negotiator. That said, isn’t this how it’s done? Trump says, ‘All the profits to charity.’ Network comes back, ‘Not an option. We’ll give ten percent, not a penny more.’
Trump makes a counter offer, and so forth, until at some point agreement is reached...no?
I read the 5 points put out by the other campaigns and it was small ball to say the least. No wonder Trump never signed the letter.
Trump is using the rope-a-dope here ...basically using this negotiation to bolster himself as not business as usual candidate..it’s brilliant in the way it works ...it works the same way as Cruz attack during the debate
