PALMYRA — Republicans staged an upset in the race for mayor and control of the Borough Council in Tuesday's election.

By a vote 787 to 701, Michelle Arnold defeated Democratic incumbent Karen Scheffler in the mayoral race.

(snip)

"It's incredible," Yetter said. "I'm just stunned. I'm looking forward to serving on the council."

The victory marks the first time in years that the borough, which has been a Democratic stronghold, will be led by Republicans. By winning the mayoral race and the two seats, Republicans will hold a majority on the governing body...

To state the obvious...if this were a Republican president, especially GW Bush, and downticket disaster had been happening election after election they media would be screaming from the rooftops about his ‘anti-coattails’ or similar.

Still, I’d rather have the result than the hype.

I would expect there to be calls for a recount. Typically, these turn into a series of consecutive recounts, which series terminates when the Democrat ekes out a one- or two-vote margin of victory.

At that point, all recounts end, and any further call for a recount by the Republican is characterized as "trying to interfere with the will of the people."

They haven’t counted the democrat votes from dead voters yet.

Absolutely nothing. In determining a trend, an election in a town this small is meaningless. I live in a town in NJ that is one of the smallest in the entire county, and it still is bigger then this one. These elections have more to do with how many more friends you got than the other guy. These are pure issueless campaigns. Also, in NJ, these positions, mayor and town council, have absolutely minimal power over how much your taxes are, and how to spend it. The town government runs the DPW and the PD, maybe 20% of the budget. The other 80% of the money is in the hands of the school board. They are the real government of the town. They wield real power over the taxpayers, the mayor and councilman are just potted plants compared to them. The irony is that the voters rarely show up or even care about who they elect to the school board, the real power brokers. The ones who can inflate your tax bill high enough to make you move out of state. The town government does not have the power to make you flee, but the school board does.

But this isn’t just this small town. Most of the readers are also factoring in Houston and Kentucky.

Wikipedia lists Palmyra’s 2010 population at 7,398. That’s a pitiful turnout.
