I had the same offer. In actuality, it was an offer to arrange an appointment which at that time had to come from a Congressman.

I find this entire episode to be detestable and I am not even a Carson supporter. I’d love to see the next debate: first question and all the candidates toss the media a finger and interview each other.

There always has been a degree of politics for getting into our armed service academies/schools. If Westmoreland wanted it to happen and Carson were so inclined, it would have happened.

That isn’t even close to an offer of “scholarship”*.
Did Carson complete the required application? Get a Congressman/Senator’s approval?

If not, than no such thing as “turn down”....

*There is no such thing as “scholarships” to service academies...

Aren’t West Point students offered admission without tuition in exchange for serving their country upon graduation ? So yes he could have construed that as a “scholarship” school.

I think you might be a troll, which is an accusation I make very rarely. Your posting history indicates that you’ve posted quite a few articles since your September sign-up date (all election-related) and commented about four times.

Freepers beware.

Yes I do. Top for Detroit and black. Yes, I believe it. I still think he’d be a horrible prez though.

I agree, but it raises the question that someone in the ROTC program he was in certainly should have known how West Point works.

Split hairs much? ROTC in college offers a scholarship. Service academies are (sorta) free is appointed.

The overall point is that Carson was approached by a military person of power and influence who said he could probably get him into the USA.

Semantics.

That was HS ROTC.

Lighten up Francis.

Let’s go ask Hillary about snipers in Bosnia.

Yes Really.

Everyone accepted to West Point gets a scholarship. Everyone accepted to a University of Illinois doctoral program (as I was 35 years ago) gets a scholarship. If the program chair at the U of Illinois told me I would get into their program, I would interpret that as a scholarship offer.

Technically, it is an encouragement to apply with the heavy assurance that a formal scholarship offer would be forthcoming. Let’s not crucify Dr. Carson with semantics.

I had the honor of mentoring a Senior ROTC Cadet from South Carolina State. He was a member of the school’s high stepping band. And, he took a lot of pride in marching. Me, I was kind of a Kelly’s Heroes lieutenant. Not much into the spit and polish aspect of soldiering. But the young man was infectious and the men of my platoon picked it up real smart while he was with us. For Junior ROTC Cadet Ben Carson to have reached Executive Officer of Detroit City is a real credit to him. Combine this with his genius level of intelligence, and I have no doubt General Westmoreland would have encouraged him to apply to West Point and may have verbally said to him, knowing the cut-off points for admission, that he’d be accepted if he applied. Carson may be embellishing on that encounter, but what 18 year old wouldn’t be impressed by Westmoreland? Another thing that comes through from this story, is that Carson was proud to be associated with the Medal of Honor winners at the meeting with Westmoreland. That says something to me.

Yes. Really. Anyone who has had a military recruitment pitch would say it was an offer of a scholarship. For anyone who has had a military recruitment pitch and then did not follow it to the military would always think that is what it was a scholarship especially if had been pitched by general Westmoreland. You trouble yourself much for semantics because of your dislike for Dr. Ben Carson?

The room was full of ROTC guys. You really think Westmoreland singled him out?

In 1969, if he was the only black ROTC guy, certainly.

Well, if this one is the same as the Twitter user of the same handle, then it’s a troll. H/T to another Freeper who pointed that out.
