Politico Edits Ben Carson Hit Piece, Drops Claims of ‘Fabrication’
Breitbart ^ | October 6, 2015 | Staff

Politico has rewritten the headline, lede, and several portions of the text of an article accusing Ben Carson of "fabricating" part of his personal biography involving the Military Academy at West Point.

The story, bearing the byline of reporter Kyle Cheney, now omits the original version's declarations that Carson's statements were false or fraudulent, as seen in an archive of the article.

It sounds like he got an offer of help from people who could assure that he would get in, not to mention that he probably would have been able to get in on his own, considering his record.

It’s like those kids who are legacies: they have not yet applied, but they have an assurance of acceptance.

Think about it: he was 18 years old, the first in his family to go to college, and back then, they were not as crazy as they are now about how people apply, get in, etc. I got into college by dropping in, filling out a one-page form, and the next week got the acceptance letter. Obviously nowhere near as prestigious as West Point or Yale, but the timing suggests that they didn’t do a lot of checking of my records, either. When one of my children looked into the same school, it was Common Apps and the whole drill all the way, and the school does NOT accept everyone.

-- The only onfabricating anything is Ben Carson. --

I don't even have to check the original sources anymore, to figure out which, between Carson and Politico is the bigger liar. And now I know I can put the veracity of your posts in with Politico.

You should have no objection to that, by your own words, "The only onfabricating anything is Ben Carson."

Politico should be shut down IMO.
At least Kyle Cheney should be fired.

As the parent of a WP graduate, (but not a Carson supporter), I can offer the following observations.

West Point and all Army officers are encouraged to look for promising young men, and to encourage them to apply. If the young man in question is interested, these officers will write letters of endorsement to the West Point admittance committee on their behalf. These letters of recommendation go West Point directly, to be included in the potential cadet’s file, and these letters are very important. West Point then sends an acceptance or rejection letter.

If one gets an acceptance letter, the next phase begins, which will, hopefully, lead to an appointment.

After West Point’s admittance office decides which potantial applicants they will accept as future cadets, they send lists to an army officer near the young person and interviews begin.

Eventually, the list of potential applicants are sent to the local congressperson, and then another committee interviews the applicants, and then, some are offered an appointment, depending on how many openings there are in that congress person’s district.

At the time my son went through the process, I think each congressman could have 5 from his district attending, so if 4 were already there, he could only choose 1 for the upcoming year.

Hope this helps clear up the media nonsense.

When my son decided t try for an appointment, we thought of it as a “scholarship”, as there is no tuition, and cadets are paid a stipend from which they purchase their uniforms and other essentials. After graduation, they are expected to serve for a specified period of time in the Army. If they drop out of the Academy after a certain point, they are expected to pay the Army back, or enter the service immediately without rank.

So, I can see how military officers/Westmoreland might have explained to a very young Carson that he could get, with their recommendation, an appointment to WP if he decided to apply.

I think it would be a normal thing for an advocate for West Point to explain going there as a scholarship. It’s language a kid would understand. I’m betting they still do the same.

They actually use that terminology for ROTC. It is not a ‘scholarship’ as if from the university. It is money from the military via ROTC that pays for tuition, board, and supplies for a specified period.

But it isn’t the university doing so. It’s just convenient language.

“I was offered an appointment to the US Merchant Marine Academy in 1968”.

Good for you, but Carson was not offered an “appointment or a scholarship” and he admitted it tonight on O’Reilly. He said a representative told him it would be “easy” for him to get in. When is it ever easy to get into West Point? He agreed with O’Reilly the book could have been worded differently. Too bad O’Reilly didn’t mention the interview with PBS two weeks ago when he repeated the exact same lie, that he was “offered a full scholarship” to West Point.

“Speaking as a Cruz supporter, the fact that you grossly overstate Carson’s position on immigration and gun control causes me to question your understanding of his association with Sharpton and Farrakhan.”

I agree with euram that Carson is pro-amnesty since he wants to let illegals stay as guest workers. That would include families that get to stay as well. With nobody leaving, that’s the definition of amnesty.

I’d guess that Cruz is also pro-amnesty since he is strangely silent on what he would do with the illegals here. Nor has he explained why we need an increase of 500% of H1B visas nor recanted that statement. I was for Cruz, but got tired of waiting for explanations.

I think you oversimplify Carson and Cruz, being anxious to act on emotion rather than evidence and common sense. Have you carefully read Dr. Carson on these subjects? Can you articulate his position accurately without inserting your own opinion? I doubt it.

Funny how the Carson Squad here is neglecting the fact that the Carson campaign already came out and admitted that was he wrote in his book wasn’t truthful;

Talking Points Memo: http://talkingpointsmemo.com/livewire/ben-carson-west-point-admission-fabrication

The Politico softening the edges of its story doesn’t change that.

A 17 year old...sure. After all, it is just like a full ride scholarship.

Furthermore, our schools at the end of the year when they tabulate the dollar value of the scholarships their students have won include the full value of academy appointments and ROTC in their totals just as if they were scholarships.

So, they use that same language, too.

So....

Keystone and jobs comes out today, together with ‘confirmation’ of a sort that the Russian jet was shot down by US arms held by ISIS. Then, there’s the thing about 0bama being a chickens#it in 2007 and not going on Fox for a debate. There are a couple of other stories about Hillary, including more on the ‘former Presidents’ (not a gaffe-when 0bama is thrown in), and the text of the TPP. Rubio’s smarmy past and present billionaire’s support, from deep in the bowels of the GOPe, shows up.

So, who stands to gain the most?

And so, we have a rather serious dustup on Carson: a two-fer.

“knife stabbing and hammer to his mom’s head fabrications.”

I don’t even know why Carson would bring something like that up. I just don’t get it. That was a bad idea.
