Absolutely...let’s give the money to science students so they can grow up to promulgate notions such as Anthropological Global Warming...

Thank you for that! I guess private institutions have the right to do as they please, but state-sponsored colleges and universities should not be allowed to diminish the educational process with athletics with it’s attendant unworthy faux students. It’s all just more rah-rah and it should not be allowed. One of our kids went to Boston University. Cost about $200k. And you know what, while taking in this kind of tuition money, they were spending everything they could get their hands on on athletic facilities. Our child was studying music. Their practice rooms were in the basement of a former auto dealership on Comm Ave. that was a sweat box.
He didn’t leave a bequest to its engineering or business or law departments, but only to the athletics! He’s not alone.

Athletes, in general, are not honor students. Our daughter was an honors student in high school, and was accepted to eight major universities based on her academics, not because she could throw a ball! I am sure that there are exceptions, but I will bet you that there are not many academically rated football players around. Colleges and universities don’t need to be the “ farm teams” for professional athletics, particularly when they drain resources that should be put into academics.

And I guess you’d be willing to give up all the microelectronics, vehicles and everything you have today to make sure no research goes to AGM is that it? Maybe to satisfy you we should set up “The Football University of the Ozarks” or some such institution, to “foster the high ideals” of athletics. Just think of all the “kegger parties,” campus rapes, etc. the rest of the schools would be missing!
I used that as an example of how alumni feed athletic vs academic programs.

No, not at all, I just think that athletics and a post-secondary education are a bad fit. Guess we disagree. Beyond that I see “professional sports” as one of those things that’s contributing to the demise of our country, because the become the be all and end all for a lot of people who use them as a substitute for living and participating in making our country work. If that’s “touchy,” count me in.

Absolutely true, but it still doesn’t mean that college athletics have been good for post secondary education. As far as “watching a couple of football games on a weekend” is concerned, I have neigbors whose whole lives revolve around sports on TV! I went to a Raiders game with a neighbor some years ago, and the pre-game party involved “Ballpark Franks” (and nothing else would do), watching reruns on a big-screen while eating and drinking “all the right stuff.” Then going to the game which was so bad I kept awake watching the Raiderettes. Afterward, we went to a sports bar where the conversation devolved into football minutae to the point where I had to call my wife to come get me. At 3 am, this when this guy finally got home, he called and woke us up because he had just realized that “he’d lost me.” So there are people who are so developmentally disabled, to whom life revolves around team sport to the point where nothing else matters.
