Black football players at Missouri: We'll sit out until system president resigns

(CNN)Black football players at the University of Missouri have joined calls demanding the ouster of the president of the state's four-campus university system over alleged inaction against racism on campus.

About 30 players made their thoughts known Saturday night in a tweet posted by Missouri's Legion of Black Collegians.

"The athletes of color on the University of Missouri football team truly believe "Injustice Anywhere is a threat to Justice Everywhere," read the tweet. "We will no longer participate in any football related activities until President Tim Wolfe resigns or is removed due to his negligence toward marginalized students' experience."

The players' move is the latest salvo in a spiraling debate over the experiences of African-American students at Missouri, who have complained of inaction on the part of school leaders in dealing with racism on the overwhelmingly white campus.

“Oh, and by the way, gentlemen, the DA would like to chat with some of you about certain off-campus incidents you have been involved in since your arrival in Columbus that have been, shall we say, swept under the rug.”

And it’s all sponsored by idiot alumni who fund the athletic programs rather than any scientific research.

Absolutely...let’s give the money to science students so they can grow up to promulgate notions such as Anthropological Global Warming...

Here’s a better idea. Let’s get rid of intercollegiate athletics! It’s just a disgrace how college athletic teams bring in a bunch of people who really don’t have the mental accuity to be there, prop them up so they can stay matriculated, so they can play this sport or another. Just how does that comport with what college is supposed to be about? Yeah, I know there’s a ton of money involved. Coaches make millions, and the schools count on TV revenue and all that BS. But none of it furthers the mission of a college education.

A whole set of evils of which money is the root.

You bet the DA will be back in action. I've lived in Pocatello since 2000. Since that time, the only drive by shootings involved the black recruits to the football and basketball teams at Idaho State University. That just isn't done around here. We're armed. We shoot back. Locals know that's not a good idea.

Thank you for that! I guess private institutions have the right to do as they please, but state-sponsored colleges and universities should not be allowed to diminish the educational process with athletics with it’s attendant unworthy faux students. It’s all just more rah-rah and it should not be allowed. One of our kids went to Boston University. Cost about $200k. And you know what, while taking in this kind of tuition money, they were spending everything they could get their hands on on athletic facilities. Our child was studying music. Their practice rooms were in the basement of a former auto dealership on Comm Ave. that was a sweat box.

He didn’t leave a bequest to its engineering or business or law departments, but only to the athletics! He’s not alone.

So what...?

Why is music, or any of the fine arts, more ‘attendant’ to the educational process than athletics...?

Athletes, in general, are not honor students. Our daughter was an honors student in high school, and was accepted to eight major universities based on her academics, not because she could throw a ball! I am sure that there are exceptions, but I will bet you that there are not many academically rated football players around. Colleges and universities don’t need to be the “ farm teams” for professional athletics, particularly when they drain resources that should be put into academics.

And I guess you’d be willing to give up all the microelectronics, vehicles and everything you have today to make sure no research goes to AGM is that it? Maybe to satisfy you we should set up “The Football University of the Ozarks” or some such institution, to “foster the high ideals” of athletics. Just think of all the “kegger parties,” campus rapes, etc. the rest of the schools would be missing!

I used that as an example of how alumni feed athletic vs academic programs.

No, not at all, I just think that athletics and a post-secondary education are a bad fit. Guess we disagree. Beyond that I see “professional sports” as one of those things that’s contributing to the demise of our country, because the become the be all and end all for a lot of people who use them as a substitute for living and participating in making our country work. If that’s “touchy,” count me in.

Well, since colleges have been sponsoring athletics for over a hundred years, your view appears to be ‘bad fit’ with them...

I see “professional sports” as one of those things that’s contributing to the demise of our country

Hmmm...all the cultural and moral rot in this country, and you think pro sports is going to do us in...OK...

a lot of people who use them as a substitute for living and participating in making our country work

so, watching a couple of football games on a weekend, with an interest in the outcome, precludes us from functioning as citizens...who knew...?

“Well, since colleges have been sponsoring athletics for over a hundred years, your view appears to be ‘bad fit’ with them...”

Absolutely true, but it still doesn’t mean that college athletics have been good for post secondary education. As far as “watching a couple of football games on a weekend” is concerned, I have neigbors whose whole lives revolve around sports on TV! I went to a Raiders game with a neighbor some years ago, and the pre-game party involved “Ballpark Franks” (and nothing else would do), watching reruns on a big-screen while eating and drinking “all the right stuff.” Then going to the game which was so bad I kept awake watching the Raiderettes. Afterward, we went to a sports bar where the conversation devolved into football minutae to the point where I had to call my wife to come get me. At 3 am, this when this guy finally got home, he called and woke us up because he had just realized that “he’d lost me.” So there are people who are so developmentally disabled, to whom life revolves around team sport to the point where nothing else matters.
