Debt-free college: the new Democratic mantra
San Jose Mercury News ^ | 11/08/2015 | Katy Murphy

The issue has crystallized as a central one in the Democratic presidential race, with Hillary Clinton, Bernie Sanders and Martin O'Malley all calling for the federal government to spend hundreds of billions of dollars over the next decade to make college affordable. The concept of "debt-free college at all public universities" is somewhat disingenuous in that it is debt free for the individual but adds to the national debt. There still is a debt to be paid.

The kind of “education-free” ride they’ll get. Worth nothing except maybe a government job.

Not ONE question to the Dems on how they would pay for anything or mention of the nation debt during the CNN softball question debate.

I think free college is the perfect complement to zero knowledge indoctrination majors. “Fill in the blank” studies.

If this happens, ALL public colleges will be unfit for decent students. Give drug dealers, pimps, prostitutes, racist antagonists, criminals, moms collecting kids etc a place to hang out for free.

That will render a collage diploma as useful as a participation trophy

Hillary — “Legal Dope! Free College!”

She locked up the youth vote.

After a few years, they’ll find the graduation rates are too low and they’ll start handing out diplomas for showing up on campus, just like today’s high schools.

Debt Free College?

That’s what we had before the government got involved.

Back then it was called “Pay As You Go”.

We spent our sunmmer breaks and time after class working at real jobs instead of protesting against the Constitution and law enforcement and Israel and endlessly sending texts and FB posts about how the taxpayers should pay for our college.

I remember when High School was a privilege but we still had to buy our own books.
Now High School is completely free and there is still a high drop out rate.
Wonder what the college drop out rate is?

debt free college will result in worthless degrees. if you spend 0 on something, that is what it will be worth; nothing.

and when colleges learn that payment is guaranteed regardless of the quality of the education, they will no longer care.

I went to college debt free! Worked my tail off during college too and paid as I went! (also I went to community college for the first 60 credits.)

So lemme get this straight - you want me to work longer so you can take more of my money and use it to indoctrinate more students into becoming libtard Commies that will continue to march to the beat of someone like the current occupant of the WH. Not on your life.

So our affordable college education ought to be as easy-peasy as affordable health care, I imagine.

The “debt” will be to the federal govt and its bureaucrats. Who wants their child to be beholden to those kind of demons?

For a while I taught a series of introductory programming courses.
Regularly failed 1/3rd of the class. Most of them just wouldn’t do the work - capable, attended, but had no inclination to do assignments sufficiently to pass. Most of these had declared a major where programming was essential, so I doubt they graduated. (BTW: they were allowed to take it again. Most of them still didn’t do the work, and failed again. Didn’t learn anything, including “being stupid hurts”.)

What is the old maxim, “Any politician that promises to take from Peter to give to Paul will certainly get the vote of Paul”?

I don’t want you to do anything you don’t want to, but I can certainly commiserate with you. Last time I checked the government hasn’t listened to a damn thing I tell them but to put my name on a kill list.
