Here’s why people are mad about Starbucks’ red cups

Starbucks started its holiday cup tradition in 1997--so “this year's design is another way Starbucks is inviting customers to create their own stories with a red cup that mimics a blank canvas.” It’s also worth noting previous Starbucks red cups lacked any outright Christian symbolism.

Jeffrey Fields, Starbucks vice president of design and content, said in the release that in the past the holiday cups have told stories. This year, Starbucks “wanted to usher in the holidays with a purity of design that welcomes all of our stories," Fields wrote. He said that the coffee chain “has become a place of sanctuary during the holidays,” so it’s “embracing the simplicity and the quietness of it.”

Tim Horton’s is half the price and twice the quality... but even Tim’s is too expensive. If I want a good cup of coffee (and a free refill) for less than Tim’s, I go to McDonald’s.

Better yet I just make it myself! Freshly ground, frozen, high quality beans means a fresh cup every time!

Do you really expect Starbucks to have little baby Jesus’ on their cups? Mary holding a baby? They’re materialistic pagans, for Buddha’s sake!

You can’t expect them to have trees and santa clauses, because many people think they are Christian symbols. They’re not.

Be happy they even acknowledge Christmas in some way.

Be happy they don’t have ramadan cups with images of machetes and blood-dripping necks.

I don’t buy the premise of this issue....that sane, Christian people are actually upset about these cups.

Nor do I. I don't give two hoots what they do, I don't ask anyone to affirm my beliefs on their coffee cups. This came from some article saying "Christians Everywhere Are Outraged..." While in fact there are plenty of things for people to be outraged about, coffee cups are pretty low on the scale. This is just click-bait.

Proud to say I have never wasted my dollars on Starbucks.

My dollars go to Folgers run twice through a $10 coffee maker on the kitchen counter.

BLOOD RED! Satan’s color! The color of Stalin! did you know that Santa Claus is an Anigram for “Satan’s Claws”? When will the horror stop! Could be worse—they could serve green cups for Mohammid.

Any other coffee but Starbucks.

I’m sick of their Anti-American stance on everything.

I actually cut them off when they attacked the second amendment a few months ago.

Was just in a Kneaders restaurant and it was decked out with Christmas gifts, decor and music and things that said, “Merry Christmas”. Very nice.

When they ask you your name, just tell them “Merry Christmas”. I’d do it, but I don’t buy corporate coffee.

Has Starbucks opened that stand alone store in Ferguson yet?

Or the one in inner city Baltimore? Or are they only talk...

Unmentioned: Starbucks sells & prominently promotes a “Christmas Blend”.

Seems some people on all sides of every issue are looking for offense.
And there are people on all sides of every issue looking for the opposition to be offended (however few among however many) so accusations of absurd & baseless offense may be imputed.

It’s coffee, people. Shut up about unrelated theology and drink it already - or don’t if you’re so inclined, leaving the coffee drinkers to their preferred beverage in peace.

I dunno...Compared to what some companies have done to destroy Christmas, the red and green cups seem almost...spiritual.

Starbucks didn’t attack the 2nd Amendment, they got understandably annoyed at armed idiots using their stores to irritate & scare customers, and told them to stop in a way most sensible people (who are not wrapped up in the nuances of legality & protocol on the issue) would respond. If such people acted that way at my store, I’d get pissed off too. I’d not expect perfect finesse in handling the situation in either case.

Kudos to Starbucks for trying to hold a neutral position (to wit: “if it’s legal, we’re OK with it”) for as long as they did. A whole lotta activists TRYING to be annoying with weapons SUCCEEDED in being annoying with weapons, leading Starbucks to say “well, holding a neutral position isn’t working, so now we have to take sides and our side is ensuring our customers aren’t annoyed/scared by gun-flaunting idiots” and change their position accordingly.

And yes, there IS A DIFFERENCE between someone reasonably & discretely exercising open carry, vs activist jerks being “in your face” about open carry. If not for the latter, the former would still be officially welcome at Starbucks.

Because they’re over sensitive whiny idiots who go through life seeking reasons to be offended?

Really people, get over it. The logo is green, the cup is red, that’s the Christmas color scheme.

You have to tell them your name is Merry Christmas and they write your name on your cup.

Presto !

The barista even has to call it out. Hah!

Does anyone really expect liberal StarBucks to put Merry Christmas on its cups.

IIRC, they've used snowflake designs in the past. I wouldn't expect anything beyond a generic winter theme, if anything.

Hey, not everyone is like Omark Industries...
