Donald Trump speaking in Springfield, Illinois, November 9th, 2015.

Business Insider is following Donald Trump on the campaign trail this week.

Last night, Trump spoke at a rally in Springfield, Illinois. More than 10,000 people attended. It was standing-room-only, floor to rafters. According to the Trump campaign, Trump's attendance shattered a record set by Elton John 37 years ago.

In the view of this Business Insider reporter, many political pundits do not yet appreciate how compelling a speaker Trump is. They also do not yet appreciate how much passion and energy he can inspire. Trump's can-do reputation and the public's disgust with normal politicians and politics as usual are fueling a startling degree of fervor in his supporters.

In short, this Business Insider reporter believes that Trump's potential as a candidate is still being underestimated.

Springfield is where Abraham Lincoln is from. President Obama launched his own campaign from there as well.

Ted Cruz is a good man. He’ll make a great VP. Then President.

“Ted Cruz is a good man. He’ll make a great VP. Then President.”

That is the way I see it. Go Trump/Cruz

I am a Cruz guy first...but I don't see Trump letting go of the mic.

What I do see is a Trump/Cruz ticket.

Ted Cruz has already said in public that he is not available for VP.

He will be the GOP candidate, but Trump remains a big question. If he goes Turd party Hildabeast wins.

Ted Cruz has close association with the Bushes.

He worked on George W. Bush’s 2000 presidential campaign as a domestic policy adviser and served in the Bush administration as associate deputy attorney general in the Justice Department and director of policy planning in the Federal Trade Commission.

Heheh. Carson must be selling a hell of a lot of books.

My mom would have hit me on the head with a hammer if it would have inspired me to write and sell as many books as Carson.

You continue to bean idiot!

The Bushes hate Cruz above all other things.

Cruz is the sole antithesis of establishment governance.

Cruz is 44 years old and he has unlimited potential to change this country for the better. I would much rather have Trump win now and have Cruz continue to develop for the future. If elected now, Cruz would make a great president. If elected 8 years from now, Cruz would be a spectacular president and perhaps our best ever.

I’m 52 and I’m way better now then I was at 44 and I feel I’m at the peak of my career. Cruz could really benefit from an additional 8 years of development.

Of course he said he's not available for VP. What do you expect him to say.

I would love it if Ted gained traction...but Trump ain't gonna give up the mic and Ted is still gonna be building his brand.

Don't for a moment think that Ted wouldn't get on the Trump train if that's what it takes to win the WH.

It will be Trump/Cruz.

And eventually, it will be Cruz/Wherever.

If he has all of this support, how come no one shows up at his rallies?

This phenomenon has a name: the Bradly effect

Calling me idiot will not change FACTS.

Do a Google search and you will know first hand about Cruz association with the Bushes.

52?

You're just getting started. Hang in there, you are in the winning years.

All the earlier ones were just fodder for what you will experience in the near and distant future.

I unfortunately retired at 40. I was at my prime...a senior investment banker on Wall St.

But the crash of '87 and a crisis of conscience ended my career.

That said, it is what it is.

Hang tough til the finish line. You'll know it when you see it.

Best of luck and may God speed!

How dare you insult us "bean idiots"?;-)

We produce half the natural gas on the planet (however hard it is to capture).
