John Bel Edwards defeats David Vitter in Louisiana governor race

Democrat John Bel Edwards won the runoff election for Louisiana governor Saturday, defeating the once-heavy favorite, Republican David Vitter, and handing the Democrats their first statewide victory since 2008.

Edwards, a state lawmaker, will take over the office from term-limited Republican Gov. Bobby Jindal in January.

Voters' rejection of Vitter was a stunning turn of events for the U.S. senator, who has been a political powerhouse in the state for years and started his campaign nearly two years ago as the race's front-runner.

Not surprising considering Vitter’s personal challenges.

Jindal’s high negatives cost Vitter.

Edwards also continued to strike at Vitter for the prostitution scandal, most notably when he ran a TV ad that said Vitter missed a vote to honor soldiers because of a phone call from the prostitution service, choosing "prostitutes over patriots."

Whoa! Talk about a gut punch!

I hear that dead voters turned out in huge numbers to vote for Edwards.

A lot of GOP voters couldn’t stand Vitter and crossed over to vote for Blue Dog Democrat Edwards.

It helped he was more conservative than Vitter.

I wouldn’t have voted for Vitter.

The evidence is telling: the GOP won down-ballot races.

Republican voters simply detested Vitter.

Don't know either, don't know LA, but part of me is not troubled by this although the media will hype this as "voters reject Republicans." But we need fewer career pols who go through the revolving door if House, Senate, governor, back to Senate, attorney general, and on and on.

Get a life--preferably outside of politics and in Vitter's case, with his hookers.

It helped he was more conservative than Vitter.

You don't know what you're talking about. Hillary was making robocalls for Edwards Friday. Vitter has one of the most conservative voting records in the U. S. Senate, and while he was a state representative, he consistently voted conservative.

Yup. It was the anti-incumbent mood and Vitter was seen by GOP voters as part of the Washington establishment.

That along with his moral short-comings, led voters to repudiate him.

The GOP establishment could have nominated someone else and he might have beaten Edwards.

Vitter had no chance against a Blue Dog Democrat.

I don’t vote in Louisiana, but I wouldn’t have voted for him either. White trash.

I voted for Vitter. And would vote for him again. Edwards is a typical tax and spend Democrat. He will immediately try to raise taxes in a special legislative session next Spring.

Sorry, Vitter cannot blame his personal failures on Jindal.

The Advocate reported that Fields traveled on a private plane that carried Edwards and several others to Washington, D.C., on Oct. 30 for a fundraiser at the home of political consultant James Carville.

Your comments are telling. You stated that you voted for Vitter. Then, instead of telling us why you voted for Vitter, you gave us the reasons you voted against Edwards.

A lot of people aren't into this "lesser of two evils" voting anymore.

What are Vitter's personal failings? Perhaps people don't want to vote for people with "personal failings" because so often they let us down.

You’re not paying attention. See my post #6. I explained that Vitter’s voting record is one of the most conservative in the US Senate. He’s up there with Ted Cruz. That’s why I voted FOR Vitter.

As far as the “lesser of two evils,” that condition is ALWAYS the case, unless you’re running for office yourself. That’s the only time you can be assured that you will vote for someone who agrees with your views 100%. I’ve never, ever met a soul in my 65 years that I agree with ALL the time.

I’ll be you haven’t either.

What are the personal issues for Vitter that keep getting referred to, but nobody spells out what they are?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_Vitter

In early July 2007, Vitter’s phone number was included in a published list of phone records of Pamela Martin and Associates, a company owned and run by Deborah Jeane Palfrey, also known as the “D.C. Madam”, convicted by the U.S. government for running a prostitution service. Hustler identified the phone number and contacted Vitter’s office to ask about his connection to Palfrey.[21][22] The following day, Vitter issued a written statement in which he took responsibility for his “sin” and asked for forgiveness.[23]
