My first thought when this news broke was, Turkey is a nation of little importance in the grand scheme of things, it’s certainly not a big player on the world scene, Turkey would NOT have shot down a Russian plane without getting permission from the USA and NATO (asking NATO is the same thing as asking the USA).

NATO is not going to join Turkey in a jihad against Russia and Putin is not going to start World War 3 either. Russia is broke which is why Putin is in the Middle East selling delivery systems to Iran and conventional arms to Assad. Texas and California both have GDP’s larger than Russia and Putin will not risk a nuclear holocaust in Russia for several reasons not the least of which is that it would ruin his two months a year at his dacha.
Putin is just as big an asshole as Obama and Erdogan. All three deserve each other.

Turkeys business. Not ours. And your description of MIGS flying over Key West without being shot down is a poor commentary on us as a nation. I remember defectors flying MIGS to Florida in the late 60’s but have no memory of routine MIG flyovers.

Best I remember (after almost 50 years) the intent was to deny them operational information on our missile system.
It was the Air Force’s job to escort them and/or down them.
We did go to ‘alert’ when they came over. I’m pretty sure that was 4 to 6 times a year.
Air Force from Homestead or Navy jets from Boca Chica met them. (Don’t want to slight the Navy!)
