Bromance on the Rocks: Surging Ted Cruz Begins to Poke Donald Trump

Ted Cruz's moment has arrived.

Less than 10 weeks before Iowa voters their cast the first votes of the presidential campaign season in Feb. 1 caucuses, a new Quinnipiac poll shows the Texas senator statistically tied with Republican presidential front-runner Donald Trump for the lead in the state. Perhaps not so coincidentally, Cruz is tentatively beginning to take on the brash New York billionaire after months of cozying up.

Twice in recent days, the Texan has seized opportunities to distance himself from Trump's policies and rhetoric. First, Cruz disagreed with Trump after the New Yorker expressed openness to setting up a registry of Muslim Americans in the wake of the Paris terrorist attacks. "I'm a big fan of Donald Trump's but I'm not a fan of government registries of American citizens," Cruz told reporters in Iowa, according to Politico. "The First Amendment protects religious liberty, I've spent the past several decades defending religious liberty."

Then over the weekend, he politely chided inflammatory rhetoric from fellow Republicans on immigration, when asked about Trump during an interview with the Associated Press. "Tone matters," Cruz said. "Are there some in the Republican Party whose rhetoric is unhelpful with regard to immigration? Yes." Cruz's campaign said to expect more distinctions to come.

Differing on policy is one thing, winning hearts and minds is another.

Never said it wasn’t diverse—folks who have something to say all the way to, well, those who don’t, but say it anyway. I myself sometimes fall into the latter category. When it isn’t me, I like to point it out.

What was so different, that you "heard", from what is in this article?

Did Cruz, or did he not use that stupid "tone" tripe?

You are so funny!!!!
You say Cruz is owned by a hedge fund banker.

Meanwhile Trump says he would consider nominating Carl Icahn for his Treasury Secretary.

Icahn is the world’s richest hedge fund manager!

And Icahn says he will set up a super pac for Trump for an “initial”
150 million dollars.

"Tone matters," Cruz said.

"And tunes matter too", Cruz continued.   "And have I got a tune for you!   This is my new 'presidential campaign theme song', which I am unveiling for you tonight!"

"Here goes!"

"Teddy Boy"

Don’t forget his Goldman Sachs ties via Heidi Cruz ... G&S is the most leveraged bank in the nation - almost 500:1 G&S is way over its head in credit default swaps and derivatives. But I’m sure the bank’s “sleeper agent” - that would be Heidi - has absolutely no influence on Senator Cruz.

Your full of crap. TPA gave obamba TPP, that is just a fact. You get back to me in February when TPP is enacted into law with full Congressional support. Once that happens, there is no way Cruz can get elected dog catcher. Cruz not only voted for TPA, he lobbied his peers to vote for it to.

I just think we should be very careful here.

We know the media and the E’s hate Trump and Cruz ... they want them to take each other out.

I’m for Ted Cruz but I’m also for Donald Trump if he has a better chance of winning.

The last thing we need is for Trump to be out ... and he’s not; he has huge rallies.

I don’t want them to get into it... I want Ted to be Veep if he isn’t the candidate.

And Trump; has told EVERYONE that he does NOT want a PAC and sent his lawyers after those who had opened many, in his name.

Ichan, like Trump, has said that he'll do any job that Trump wants him to do, in his administration and for FREE/at no salary !

It isn't Carl who is/would tell Trump what to do; just the reverse.

I read what he said and I agree with him. We need to be firm on enforcing the law but there is no benefit to using a tone that comes across hateful. Why give our opponents the ammunition to try and paint us as mean-spirited.

Trump needs to work out a deal with Cruz and Rubio.

Rubio I don’t want as POTUS but he would be just fine in another post.

I want all this primary crap over and done with so Trump can concentrate on destroying Hillary. He is unafraid and will say anything.... and we all know how much there is to say about Hillary :-)

My dream is a Trump/Cruz ticket and then Trump serves just one term (or less) and Cruz does 8yrs and then is appointed to the Supreme Court by his successor.

The only primary candidates with any chance of the nomination are Trump, Cruz and Rubio. So if Trump works a deal he could start hitting Hillary and be done with the primary altogether.

Rubio is who the GOPee sees as the only chance now to keep Trump from the nomination...they don’t want Cruz so they will never back him... they think (rightly so) that Rubio would be soft on immigration.

If the GOPee uses Kasich/Jeb Super-Pacs to hit Trump his response should be a humongous attack on Rubio.... no point in hitting Kasich or Jeb as they have zero chance and the GOPee attack on Trump would be solely to give a boost to Rubio.

Cruz never said anything about what Trump was proposing. He simply said that he liked Trump but would not support a national registry of Muslims because he thought would be unconstitutional.

Because it’s BS. I’ve already heard the “mcconnell played me”, “I’ll just change it after I’m elected POTUS” and the always popular “I actually voted for the corker bill to stop the Iran deal”. Cruz may be able to be played by mcconnell, but I will not be played by Cruz again.
