I’m sitting here on Free Republic wearing my 7n6 spamcan tshirt. I shoot 5.45x39 every day and I use it in carbine competitions all the time. The picture is of brass, which is obtainable but extremely rare. 5.45 both surplus and domestic is 99% steel. The round in the ground is .223 and this article is moronic.
The 5.56mm cartridge case has very little to no taper at the base. The reason the magazines of the AK-47/74 series of rifles has such a pronounced curve is due to the noticeably wider base as opposed to the case mouth and the need for the curve in the magazine to ensure proper feeding into the chamber.
It looked like some of the Sheriff’s were carrying Ruger mini-14s or mini-30s. Did you notice?
Clearly Amish.
Or even know it came from a suspects gun and not a police weapon.
It makes sense now. If Farooq is an Irish terrorist then he is likely an IRA member who is trying spread the violence in Northern Ireland into the United States.
Good point. I’m thinking it’s 5.56 because it is brass, not coated steel.
and ammo (5.45x39mm):
folks- this is going to be labeled the same way that the fort hood shooter was labeled, ‘a disturbed lone wolf’
I wasn’t saying that is what it was, just saying that the case (even if they got it right that it was 5.45 x 39mm) is no absolute proof that it came from an AK-74.
And there are some ballistic advantages to the 5.45 x 39mm even in an AR platform, especially if you think you might be encountering people wearing body armor and can get ahold of the ‘good stuff ammo’ .
And it is hardly a high effort conversion. You can buy the complete weapon, or swapping uppers is just a matter of pushing two pins out, then slap the new upper in, and push the pins back.
Not that this is an argument that is worth getting into at present.
you forgot to include the poptart chewed into an “L” figure that slightly resembles a gun
AK with the newer 5.45 x 39 caliber
I don’t understand this. If AK-74’s are illegal in California along with high capacity magazines, how did the perps get them? </sarc>
YES
AK47 and AK 74 both made by Kalashnikov. The number denotes the year it was originally made. The AK 47 round is 7.62X39mm.
The AK74 round is 5.45 x39mm. Its a small nasty little round that has high velocity. A longer range than the AK47 also. I own one. Great rifle. Mine’s Bulgarian, very accurate.
BINGO!! That is the key! That is the first thing I asked myself when I heard of it just before I ended the school day where I teach. It sounds to me as if this was a cyclic event, aka full auto. I can't be sure, but it sounds like it from what I'm hearing via witness statements.
Only!!? Are you serious?
“This weapon can be found throughout the world, apparently even in California where it is not legal.”
This is NOT True! You can own AK series weapons in California. They have to be equipped with a mag release that requires a “tool” ( the nose of an unexpended cartridge, hence the acronym “bullet button”), and you are limited to 10 round mags. Alternatively, you can remove the “evil features ( i.e. pistol grip, collapsable stock and flash hider), and then you can do away with the BB.
“Full auto capable or items generally available?”
You can buy semi-auto AK-74s in the US. Since they were manufactured before the 1986 ban I suspect some might have been imported legally but I’m sure they’re expensive.
More likely if these were original full-auto, they were illegally imported (most former Soviet bloc/Warsaw Pact and some client states used them, including Syria), or they could have been illegally modified, which might be more trouble than it’s worth, but possible.
